I couldn't agree more with the subject line of this thread. I have a handful of Christmas movies that I make a point of watching every year, but Ernest Saves Christmas has been special even among these for a long time. I think my feelings about this movie come from the combination of the charm of its main characters, its silly/entertaining comedy (which seems so mild/clean by today's standards), its nostalgic value (as my brother and I watched it together as kids for many years), and the fact that you now have to make an effort if you want to watch it (because you certainly won't be bombarded with it on TV throughout December as is the case with so many other Christmas movies.
Every year since 1991, I've been watching the same VHS copy of this movie that we recorded from TV. Long after I updated most of my other movies to DVDs, this one somehow endured on VHS, and I'm actually amazed at how well the tape has held up after all these years. However, for the coming Christmas season, I finally bought a DVD copy, so I'm particularly looking forward to this year's viewings.
