How many hours did the terrorist takeover at Nakatomi last for?

John McClane Arrives maybe around 5:30 or 6:00PM at night on Christmas Eve, just starting to get dark outside but sunset around 6:00PM is common in December, the terrorists arrive seemingly 30-40 minutes after John has settled in around 6:40 or 7:00PM possibly.

Beyond this we know nothing about how long Hans and his band of thieves disguised as Terrorists were in control of the Nakatomi Tower for at all, we dont know what time Al Powell shows up in his patrol car to investigate and ends up getting shot at which brings the police force there, or what time Hans and his men were killed and the crisis was ended at all.

Maybe 4:00AM? Maybe even midnight, hard to imagine the entire crisis lasting only until just before or after midnight, seems like it took until at least 9 or 10 before the police got involved, then things lasted for hours after that, so when John finally kills Hans it might have been approaching dawn but still a few hours away, a very long and stressful hostage situation.

Was there ever a timeline given in the movie for what time everything actually starts to happen and what time it was over by? For the viewers it is only two hours, but for the characters in the movie it must have been 12 hours or longer, just imagine Hans and his men not leaving until the next morning when it was daylight outside again, they might have risked falling asleep from exhaustion while the police would simply change shifts and still be fresh, not good and John probably made it all last longer than it should have too.

When Karl emerges from the building and Powell shoots him it's still dark but very shortly after when Argyle drives John and Holly away it's not quite as dark so the sun must have started rising right then. Other than that the only clue I can think of is that Han's security guard in the lobby is watching a college football game. The game would have lasted about 3 hours. It was already dark on the west coast at this time. The game wouldn't have started any later than 7 or 8 o'clock on the east coast. That gives a little window of what time it might be. Near the end, John has to release the clasp on Holly's Rolex and the face of the watch does flash in front of the camera but it is too blurred to see the time. I don't know that it would have been set correctly anyway as it was likely a prop piece.

In the very last shot of the movie, when John and Holly are being driven away by Argyle, and the camera pans up and the credits start rolling across the screen, you can clearly see the sky is getting light and the sun is about to come up.

You should put the word spoiler in your headline. Many people have not seen this yet and now they know terrorists will seize control of the building.
