Is based on another of John Masters' novels. That is set in the 1940s, the Partition.
Masters wrote seven novels set in India, all involving protagonists from the same British family, the Savages.

Coromandel! (A 17th century English lad runs away to sea, ends up in India).
The Deceivers (An English officer goes undercover to root out the ritual murders of Thuggee).
Nightrunners of Bengal (The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857).
The Lotus and the Wind (The Great Game of British and Russian spies on the Northwest Frontier).
Far, Far the Mountain Peak (Mountaineering and World War I).

There's Bandit Queen, set in the 1960s-80s but involving a group of outcaste bandits and set in the same part of India; The Man Who Would Be King, set in Afghanistan at around the same period as The Deceivers and featuring Brits posing as Indians; and, of course, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. There are probably countless Indian films that would qualify too.
shareOne other, set around the mid 1700's, is "Clive of India," with Ronald Coleman as the title character. It deals with the effective takeover of India by the East India Company, which sets the stage for "Deceivers," etc.
