The role of providence
I've watched this movie multiple times over the years, and I was struck more this time by the role of providence in the films last-act, moral rebalanacing.
Lindy had no hope of getting out, until the marquis jacket was found. But the jacket doesn't reverse whatever evidence that jury felt implicted her. It was simply a "charged object" whose publicity could allow three judges to acknowledge the change in public opinion, and to free her without having to admit culpability.
I'm non-religious, but I think the film offers a subtle idea that God in his own time, inserts his hand to change fates.
