Not sure how far back to go...

Lindy is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison with hard labor. She will not be permitted to keep the baby with her.

Her husband is also found guilty (lesser charge) but only receives a sentence of 18 months, which the judge suspends on account of the children.

After the new baby is born, (a girl) she is raised at home by her father and older brothers. They visit Lindy at the prison.

Cut to the wilderness/outback......
Several rangers (I think) find a missing hiker who apparently fell off a cliff and died. The body has been mauled by dingos. Nearby, one of them finds baby Azaria's matinée jacket half buried in the soil. This is but a few hundred feet from where her little sleepsuit had been found after her death. The jacket was out there the whole time...

Lindy is released (clemency, I think?) after spending 5-1/2 years in prison. Her five-year-old daughter does not warm to her during the homecoming because she really doesn't know her mother. This shows the depths of the family's loss -- the fact that mother and daughter have not bonded is utterly tragic.

On screen, text reveals that eventually, husband and wife win the right to appeal their case and clear their names. All 3 Northern Territory judges agree that they were innocent.

What a waste. What a tragedy.

Thanks a lot. Jeeze, that's freaking depressing. I'm going to have rent the movie now and finish it. I'll search my area for a videostore that has it.

i just finished watching htis movie...although i missed the beginning..oh man what a powerful movie. i cried when they sent her to jail...merryl streep didn't win an award for this role? How about Sam Neil? He deserves one. I can't see a film without wondering if he's going to scratch his head now.

These are old posts but I'll reply anyway.

Yes, Meryl Streep won awards for this role, including Best Actress at Cannes. She just didn't win the Oscar.

The poster above did a good job summarizing the end of the movie. I would just like to add the last line of the movie (to the best of my recollection). It ends in a freeze shot of Lindy being released from prison, and you hear them being mobbed by reporters and photographers. They get asked why they are pursuing a pardon now that she is free anyway. Michael says, "I don't think a lot of people realise how important innocence is to innocent people." That has stayed with me.

Then the caption says that they were finally pardoned in 1988.
