This, Not Sophie's Choice, is Meryl's Greatest Performance.

I was left stunned after watching this performance. Meryl is at the peak of her powers here. Not only has she once again transformed completely, but I have never seen her invest so much emotionally into a character. The other actor's looked hopelessly inept next to her. Sophie's Choice, which won her the Oscar, is often credited as her best and it certainly is impressive display of virtuosity - one dialect on top of another on top of another. But after seeing all of her Oscar nominated performances, it's her work in this film which is the real jewel in her crown. She is often accused of being too mechanical, but here for the first time really, she managed to combine the external accents and the hair cut with a raw, layered and honest depth that I haven't seen in her work before. Maybe it was having her daughters that made her connect to this story on such a deep level? Who knows. Canne's got it right in awarding her finally. Shame the Oscar's didnt.

Agreed. I'll go even one step further. Her Lindy is one of the greatest performances I've ever seen in a film, by anyone. All of that technique and intuition are in the service of a completely uncompromised and uncompromising portrayal -- she makes us take Lindy completely on Lindy's terms, understand her and accept her and, yes, suffer with her. There's not a forced or sentimental or artificial moment from Streep that I can recall. This is acting as a great art in itself, and I cannot separate the film (which is good) from her work in it. The performance *is* A CRY IN THE DARK/EVIL ANGELS, to me, and makes it unmissable.
