1988 Oscar race, who deserved it?

I have seen this movie a few times and i think that Meryl Streep gives a flat out, best ever performance. I also think that Jodie Foster gave a chilling performance in the accused. i haven't cringed so much as i did in her rape scene. I agree with whoever said that they should have awarded both Jodie and Meryl with the award, but i want all of you oppinions.

Who do you guys think should have won the 1988 Academy award for best actress;

Jodie Foster
Meryl Streep
Sigourney Weaver?

reply

Meryl Streep

Jodie Foster and Sigourney Weaver both gave wonderful performances, but I think the Oscar really should have been Meryl's that year.

reply

jody foster definitely. She gave an amazing performance in The Accused..

reply

That's a difficult question. I give a very slight edge to Jodie Foster although Streep was memorable.

For that year, I believe Glenn Close deserved it for Dangerous Liasons, instead of Jodie Foster.

I TOTALLY agree. Everyone knew she really should have won for Fatal Attraction the year before, and this was her year. And she hasn't been nominated again since that year. It was a good year for female performances, though.

And yes, I'm a fan, as you can tell by my signature.....

No, no..."cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

Meryl Streep barely for me. Glenn Close is too close behind.

jodie foster undoubtly. She proves the great actress she is disappearing in a difficult. It was one of those times that a tie would have been wonderful but jodie foster was amazing.

Finally saw this fantastic film.
Clearly Meryl Streep was robbed at the Oscars.

The woman is truly one in a million actress. SO many out there claim to be actors but mostly are ham and eggers of the profession. Sure we have a few good ones...few and far between... but Meryl Street redefines the term. Watching her we honestly don't see "Meryl Streep." I never do. I see the character. That is the greatest gift any actor can receive.
Johnny Depp, Anthony HOpkins....are in this camp.

I just saw this film and Meryl was NOT CLEARLY robbed of an Oscar. Glenn Close, Jodie Foster, and Streep were all absolutely fantastic in their respective roles that year. It had to be one of the deepest fields in years. Any one of them could have walked away with the statue that evening. If Streep had won it instead of Foster I'd be over on "The Accused" board defending Streep's win. The same goes for Close. Sometimes we the fans wish they could award multiple Oscars, but unfortunatly there can be only one winner. If it were any other year those three (and probably Sigourney Weaver) would have gotten an award for their work.

Foster was as deserving as Streep and Close that year. It's not like she was beat out by just an average or good performance. Foster's turn as Sarah Tobias was one of the great performances in film history.

Yes, this would have been a great year for a tie for Meryl & Jodie, but my vote still goes to Jodie -- barely. Sigourney was also terrific, as was Glenn Close. And then there's Melanie Griffith, who gave one of the worst performances that the Academy ever nominated. What's even sadder is that at the Golden Globes, the 3-way tie occurred in the Best Drama Actress category and Meryl WASN'T one of the winners!!!

1) Jodie Foster
2) Meryl Streep
3) Sigourney Weaver
4) Glenn Close

....999) Melanie Griffith

Sigourney Weaver for me. I bought Dian Fossey's book and loved it and looked for the film, and Sigourney amazed me with her portrayal. Jodie Foster did a great job too, so I don't mind that she won.

I love Glenn Close more than Streep. And i love Foster and Weaver too. That year was really great. But i thiink Meryl Streep hado to take it.She ws perfect..
1.Streep
2.Close and Weaver
4.Foster
5.Griffith

If the Academy had gotten it right Meryl Streep would have won! I rented "The Accused" and wasn't impressed at all by Foster's performance. However, I rented "A Cry in the Dark" and was mesmerized by Streep (I think this was one of the first Streep performances I ever saw). So mesmerized, that I have many of Meryl's movies in my own DVD collection. I have none of the other nominees that year. I also think Meryl deserved her Oscar for Sophie's Choice and should have tied in 1999 with Hilary Swank for her performance in "Music of the Heart".

MERYL STREEP

WON

THE CANNES BEST ACTRESS AWARD FOR HER WORK IN THIS MOVIE IN 1988.

I RECKON A CANNES BEST ACTRESS AWARD IS BY FAR MORE WORTH

THAN A GOLDEN GLOBE

EVEN AN OSCAR.

An Oscar you need to try hard to win, but a Cannes it is all about the performance and NOT about star power or who's overdue and who's not overdue. Cannes has awarded the most brave, powerful, emotionally compelling performances of all time by women including:

-Katharine Hepburn in Long Day's Journey into Night
-Vanessa Redgrave in Morgan and Isadora
-Holly Hunter in The Piano
-Sally Field in Norma Rae
-Anne Bancroft in The Pumpkin Eater
-Bjork in Dancer in the Dark
-Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher and Violette Noizere
-Helen Mirren in The MAdness of King George
-Penelope Cruz in Volver
-Sophia Loren in Two Women
-Bette Davis in All about Eve.

So there you go.

And now Meryl Streep in A CRY IN THE DARK.

and so yes, she did deserve the oscar over Jodie Foster.

reply

I'm huge Streep fan, but I still think Foster deserved Oscar that year. Her performance was gut wrenching, intense and unlike other actresses who like to overact in these type of movies - very controlled.
Meryl is my 2nd choice and it's one of my favourite performances of her. I loved coldenss and strange distance of her character. She was very intriguing.
