What was the significance of Azaria's name

I don't know if I missed this part in the movie or what, but I have seen several references to the significance of Azaria's name and it's meaning. Does anyone know what it is?

Try looking up one of those meaning of names books or websites. This question was covered in the excellent mini series through my eyes. In that, the soial gossip was that it meant "sacrifice in the wilderness", but a coroner rules this out. There is another Jewish name which DOES mean that, but it is not Azaria. They do give the meaning of Azaria, and it is not at all creepy. Just can't remember what it means though.

Basically, I think the name was picked because it's pretty and in the Bible. The mother didn't speak Hebrew.

mpov-I disagree-the father was a minister, and I'm guessing that both he and his wife were not only familiar with biblical names, but the meaning behind those names.
But, like I said, there was nothing sinister about the name "Azaria".

Azaria = with the help of God

Azala = an Aramaic word meaning "to banish" or "to remove"

"They tried to say that Azaria meant 'sacrifice in the wilderness', though i dont know where they got that from."

That happened when an anonymous (and particularly nasty) caller told police he was Azaria's doctor from Mt. Isa, and that her name meant "sacrifice in the desert". Why the police allowed this information to be released is beyond me. When the public learned of this, including the fact that the Chamberlains were Seventh Day Adventists, and Michael was a minister, it fueled rumors that Azaria had been killed in a bizarre ritual. At the very least, it certainly helped put an interesting (and damning) spin on the motive for Lindy's supposed act of murder.

Kahlia is Hawaiian for clear and bright.... found it on a baby name website. I still never could figure out why people would think that a person who names their child something that would mean that they were planning to kill them.

From memory, it comes from the Esperanto phrase meaning "clean up the entrails, Michael".

Azaria is also a surname,as in Hank Azaria, but his name is pronounced " azAIRia " where her name is pronounced " azARia ",like it is spelled.

reply

Like it is spelled? OK how do you pronounce the word "area"? How about "variable" or "character".
