Semmi should have been put to death

Shouldn't Semmi have been put to death for impersonating royalty? That's typically the penalty for such an offense in monarchies. Semmi impersonated Akeem when Patrice came over in order to get a piece of tail. Even for such a trivial matter, pretending to be the crown prince would be a grave matter and not one handled so lightly.

reply

YES!! Exactly! I am from Serbia and in my country making impersonate of a royalty is no laughing matter! It is to be punished by execution. The violator is made to be mounted by several large beasts of burden until he is dead from rectal injuries. I was hoping same punishment would befall Semmi, but no, he yet lives! Such a disgrace movie! How can they let this happen??!!!

I guess "Serbian Film" was a documentary lol

reply

Probably because it was a comedy.

reply

Yeah, that would be pretty depressing in a comedy movie.

reply

He did it to protect Akeems story. He had to explain all the luxury in the appartment after all... And without blowing akeems cover.

reply

Well, maybe since Akeem was his friend he asked his father to pardon him. He knew Akeem meant no harm.

reply

You can tell by the way Akeem looks at Semmi and laughs that he's okay with it, and even kind of thinks it's funny. Also, it works towards Akeem's cause that Semmi lied. This got Patrice out of his hair and kept his secret.

Not to mention I would think it's not so much a crime to impersonate someone if you're in another country, though I could be wrong.

reply

Hey, Semmi was punished. Did you not see the look of fear and terror on his face when he was told that he would be confined to the Waldorf Astoria, and would be subject to repeated bathing by those three lovely young women?

reply

Can you cite a reference that impersonating royalty is cause for execution in Zamunda? It may fly in Serbia, but maybe Zamunda is a little more civilized. Besides, Semmi wasn't impersonating Akeem on State business, or for nefarious reasons; he was "protecting" Akeem's identity in America.

reply

Even doc benton (Daryl) got some from Patricia. LOL. & semi can apply for political refugee status if needed.

reply

He wasn't impersonating royalty; he actually is royalty too. He was just impersonating the next in the line to the throne, which is Akeem.

I don't know where you get that from. Semmi isn't Akeem's brother, he is his chief servant / master at arms (the equivalent of John in "The Slipper and the Rose"), he most definitely isn't royalty.

reply

Wouldn't have been a *beep* comedy then you idiot

reply

Eddy is right, I believe the King made it very clear he needed to be cleansed of all his sins and as far as I could tell Semmi was genuinely remorseful for his acts.

reply

Makes me think of the "Seven Years in Tibet". Brad Pit's character is breaking the law but isn't getting in trouble because he is friends with the leader.
