shareIt should be more like 3 or 4…
"'Extremely High Voltage.' Well, I don't need safety gloves, because I'm Homer SimpsonZZZZZapppp--" - Frank Grimes
Agreed. Well maybe not 3rd or 4th - but this was such a funny AND romantic film.
My husband and I loved it the first time, and still love it almost 30 yrs. and many, many viewings later. Now, our 13 yr. old loves it as well and asked to watch it a second time tonight.
Eddie Murphy was so perfect in this - the perfect young romantic leading man. I've said it before, they should have exploited his gift for this genre with 10 films like it.
I think Eddie Murphy was much funnier when he was still finding his way, as in "SNL." "48HRS," "Beverly Hills Cop" and "Trading Places" had Eddie as a comedy genius. "Coming to America" shows Eddie Murphy as a blatant narcissist. A vanity project where he knows he is too cool for the room does not show him in an attractive light. In some scenes I just wanted to slap his smug, glib character right in the face. Then almost every movie after this one just proves my point even further.

I liked Beverly Hills Cop, but I thought that character was more smug and glib than the character in Coming to America. Not smug, but way too self assured.
Coming to America did not seem like a vanity project to me at all, and his character came off as very sympathetic, modest, sweet, etc. etc.
Maybe you have to be female to get the vibe. Like Lisa said in the movie, "it's like you're above anything petty. There is something regal about you." Or words to that effect.
He was lovable and earnestly searching for his life's partner. The appeal of that to us girls is huge.
I don't agree but I wouldn't mind having you as my girlfriend.
