shareNever make assumptions about a martini.
sharetry and go on a flarers course to learn all the tricks. peope love too see you making there drinks and flicking the glasses all around the bar. impress them, they'll tell a mate and so on.
shareif there's a bartending school near where you live, I highly recommend trying it... they teach you so much. I went to one, and I learned a LOT! Flare is also very cool.
I just pour pints pints mate and engage in a bit of banter with the old men in the bar. I actually can't stand people juggling my drink. it's impressive yes, but it takes 5 minutes to get my drink. Although that shouldn't really bother because i usually drink guinness which takes a good 5 minutes to get. The point is, if you are in a trendy bar with lots of people, this juggling simply holds up the queue. Anyway, the best advice i could give is to talk to your customers and have a bit of craic with them. don't take yourself too seriously. But don't take any guff from anyone either. If I had a pound for every time some smartarse asked me for a free drink as if he was the first ever person to do so..i'd be a very rich man.

Is there a training program for bartenders?
share^ I bartend right now part time, money is decent. It's not a glamorous job by any means unless you land a job in a huge upscale establishment, which the money increases as well.
I attended a two week course on it, which helped me get a job as a bar-back, then I moved up after 6 months. Money is decent in both the bar-back and tender position, very easy to score 150-300 a night plus 7.25 hourly.
Look for a course and go from there. Or just apply for a bar backing job, but you'll need to be physically capable for it because it involves lifting kegs and running around all night.
