Clownhouse in theaters?

Was this movie released on theaters, or was it a straight to video release?
I know the movie went to a lot of movie festivals (including Sundance), but I'd like to know if it was released on comercial circuit.

Wow, didn't know that, thanks.
I just watched it a few days ago, and it's a really good movie.

No, it was definitely released in theaters because I remember watching it in a Times Square grindhouse the year it was released.

Strange how despite the lack of suspense, the movie seemed to make my skin crawl back then and during my recent viewing experience. Those clowns quietly following those youths in the house and not saying anything just got under my skin.

Interesting. I always figured the movie was put on hold because of the Victor Salva sex scandal, and then released straight to video.

I heard nothing of the controversy until I read about it on the IMDb.

During the eighties I read cover to cover the horror movie magazines such as Fangoria and Cinefantastique and do not recall reading about the controversy although the movie was written about.

My guess is the producers and film studio wanted to keep it quiet and the magazines complied because they didn't want to stop receiving promotional materials from the studios.

Is this right? of course not but it is business.

Me neither, but I don't live in the US. The only movies from Victor Salva that got a wide release around here were the Jeepers Creepers movies.

I have not seen Jeepers Creepers, but just the fact that this is a successful and well known movie franchise confirms that his career has not been affected. Is this right? Not really, but it is business.
