There's a scene in this movie where the three young fellows are watching a horror movie when suddenly the power goes out. Middle brother Jeffrey rushes to the VCR, hits a button a few times and exclaims "Oh no, the tape's ruined!". How could the power going off possibly ruin the videotape?
I think that the way a VCR works is that when playing, it lifts the flap in the back to read the images on the tape. When you stop a tape, the film tape is moved back in as the flap goes down to protect it. If the VCR was suddenly stopped due to a power outage, I'm assuming the film tape could be jammed and damaged, since the flap was not put down in the procedure which happens when you stop a tape. The best way to describe it would be to watch a tape with the cover of your VCR off (if you can do so) and you'll see how the film tape plays and what happens when you hit stop as opposed to losing complete power and the film tape could get all jumbled. Who knows? It could just be that it was an ancient model and the tape would get jammed very easily.
that is not how t works. the flap doesn't go down until it's ejected. the tape also comes all the way out of the cassette to be read by the heads. the origional poster was pretty much right to say that it would not have been broken. Not as shown at least.
He's a kid. He doesn't know how a VCR actually works, and so when the power goes out he just assumes that its broken. Not really worth the effort of debate.
