So was Daryl really an addict or was he just hiding from the police?

Both really. At first he does it to escape detection for awhile since the rehab facility was confidential. But in the long run he realizes that he needs the help. But yeah, at first I think he was just hiding from the police.

Daryl was really an addict who was hiding from the police in a rehab. That's that funny addict thinking for you- ass backwards logic.
John Larroquette tells a great story about how he used to disappear for days and even weeks when he was drinking, and one time he came home and needed an excuse to explain to his wife where he'd been so he checked into the detox facility of a hospital. The way he tells it there was a Big Book on the nightstand in his room and he read it and everything began to make sense.
It is both. He was an addict and he goes into the drug counseling program to hide from the cops after the girl's dad puts out wanted posters of him. He figured he could just disappear and all that. He didn't count on Morgan Freeman's character.
