The series ranked

Spoilers for all!

I watched a YouTube video ranking the films and while I agree with some of them, the extremely high ranking of the remake made my blood boil a little bit. Anyway, this is my ranking. What's yours?

worst to best

8. Child's Play 2019 - I don't know in what universe this movie wouldn't be the bottom choice, but I don't live in that universe. This movie is terrible. It's not good even if you try to consider it completely on its own.

7. Seed of Chucky - It has its moments, but they are few.

6. Child's Play 3 - Not awful, but it's not really particularly scary or funny. The military school idea was okay, but having a new Andy is weird, and overall it's not very memorable.

5. Curse of Chucky - I really like this movie. The cinematography and acting are wonderful, and the plot is fresh while still maintaining the vibe of the original films. The one reason I put this behind Cult is because the doll looks fairly awful in this movie. The budget was very low, and time was scarce, so I get it, but there are moments when Chucky looks like an entirely different character than we'd come to know.

4. Cult of Chucky - I like that this movie is a bit different. The tone from Curse carries over, but some really crazy shit happens in this movie that puts it over the top in the best of ways. My favorite thing is just how successful Chucky is with his voodoo. He spent so many years screwing up that curse that it was getting ridiculous. Before this film, only Tiffany had been successful at it, and I like that Chucky finally wins it all here. Also, the dolls are much better than in Curse. Andy playing a continuing role has also been a highlight of these two films.

3. Child's Play 2 - I've always liked this one. Chucky's appearance was solidified and Brad Dourif's performance is especially good. Great showdown at the end. Love it.

2. Child's Play 1988 - Not much to say about it. It's a classic. Everything is so good. This is probably the scariest entry in the series. I love the Chicago setting, the origin story, Andy and his mom, Chris Sarandon. All excellent.

1. Bride of Chucky - Still the best! quoting myself from here:

In this film, everything comes together perfectly. Its balance of horror and comedy is the most sophisticated of any of the films. Some of the earlier films take themselves a little too seriously at times, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When the earlier films were funny, it almost feels like it was an accident, but it worked, so they'd keep it. This movie knows exactly what it is. It delivers a very knowing comedic element, while not losing the edge. Tiffany! She's a worthy companion, and Jennifer Tilly brings it in her most iconic role, in the flesh and in the plastic.

The Dolls! Not only does Chucky look better in this movie than any other, but Tiff looks great too. This is the peak of the fully puppeted era Chucky. There's no CG, at least nothing obvious like faces, and still holds up visually, unlike some more recent entries.

I love Bride of Chucky!
