Was Andy supposed to be retarded?
If not, then the doll was a better actor than the kid who played him

shareHe was only six, and it was his first acting job. Yeah, he was a little stilted at the start, but he really sold it in the asylum scenes when he had to cry on cue.
His acting really got better in CP2, but unfortunately that was the last we saw of him until Curse.

He was six... so... yes.
We were all retarded at six. :P
Why does everyone give him a hard time? Other than having to play a kid stupid enough to trust a talking doll that says "bitch" he played his part wonderfully.
shareI agree. The kid did fine. I had an issue or two with him in the sequel, but I thought he was great here.

Taking him out of the third movie was a huge mistake. Child's Play 3 suffered a LOT without Alex Vincent playing Andy.

I assume Alex Vincent was either tired of acting overall, or just tired of being associated with only that part (can't say I blame him). Child's Play was silly enough on its own, but with each progressing sequel it just got sillier and sillier. I can see why he'd want to distance himself from it.
shareNo. Alex wanted to return but they decided to make Andy older and a soldier dude. At least they let him do a small cameo in part 6.
shareI read an interview with him several years ago where he talked to some (now defunct) website where he said he was really excited about filming at a military school, but at the eleventh hour he was dropped by the studio when they decided to use an older actor.
After that, he went out for a LOT of roles (including the lead in Free Willy), but the only thing he could land was a low budget flick called My Family Treasure where he barely got paid for it. (That film does include a hilarious nod to his Chucky days, though). After struggling to find roles for about two years, he gave it up and went back to New York.

Many children are too trusting when they're younger. I wouldn't be surprised if many children would actually trust a talking doll especially when they've been told they were sent down by heaven by their dead father to play with them. If you really think about it, Andy actually caught on earlier in the film about Chucky than the other children in the series. It took Tyler until nearly the end of the film to realize that Chucky was the bad guy and Alice never actually clued in that it was Chucky who was doing the killing. She still thought of him as her friend at the end of Curse.
