Andy's mom must have made good money!

Looks like the apartment they live in would be fairly expensive but it was odd that she had to save up to buy Andy a birthday present. Also, to live in such a nice place, why was she taking the bus? Typical Hollywood movie I guess.

reply

The apartment must have been rent controlled. Either that, or the landlords felt sorry for the Barclays after Andy's dad died and cut them some slack on the montly rent.

That's funny cuz I always thought that too. She works at a department store selling jewelry. A single woman who also has a son to support and of course rent and bills. And like you said that is one nice apartment. If it was now and not 1988 she never would have been able to afford it.

reply

She was probably taking the bus because of the apartment - after paying the rent, she probably didn't have the money for a car. In some big cities, paying to park can be ridiculously expensive.

Also, she was possibly drawing on a life insurance and/or pension from Andy's father after his death. Overall, while I thought the apartment was nice enough, I didn't really see it as being overly extravagant. But you're right, Hollywood very seldom shows people as broke as they would be in reality if they had the occupations their characters do.

reply

There is always that question, "How can they afford that apartment?" Look at other films like Superman, Ghost, and Shakedown and you wonder how a person who works at a certain occupation can live in that luxury.

reply

She prob had some suga daddies in the past, or OR child support lol, them women's be working dat child support!

reply

I always assumed Karen had life insurance.
The movie made a point of saying that Andy's dad was in heaven, so its likely there was life insurance there.

On a side note, if he died of an accident, she likely got even more money.

But she wasn't rich, as she could not afford to buy the Good Guy at full price.

Maybe whatever money she got from a life insurance policy on her late husband went to paying off all their bills, then whatever was left went into a college fund for Andy that he wouldn't be able to touch until he was 18, which of course, probably went into his purchase of his gun store in Curse.

"What kind of scary ass clowns came to your birthday party?"

She worked at Carson Piere Scott. I worked there for 2 years. Only pays minimum wage with no hours

I just find it funny how she works in a department store selling jewelry and she lives in an apartment and I work as a clerk and I still live at home with my parents. Yet she cant afford a good guy doll.

One option is all of their money went to paying rent, food, water bills, electric bills and other things they actually needed so she had no extra money for presents or a car.

reply

Well, I can say it now: Andy's mom was lonely after her husbands death and I became her sugar daddy. I paid her rent and a few other bills. She was pretty hot back then so it's understandable.

reply

I'm pretty sure she had two jobs. The department store was a second job. She has a drafting table in the living room and most likely that was related to her main job.
