Max Patkin was "The clown prince of baseball," and a frequent fixture at Minor league games. Not sure if he did a lot of work at the major league level, but he passed through my town as a special guest at a Travelers game (AA affiliate for the Angels now, Cardinals back then). He was kind of like the San Diego Chicken, or the Phillies Phanatic...he did goofy stuff between innings.
I don't remember rolling in the aisles at his antics, but I'm glad to be able to say I saw him perform, and glad that he was immortalized in this film.
For my money, it didn't get any better than Captain Dynamite, the guy who would lay in a box full of explosives, and blow himself up.
Bill Veeck had him working for the Cleveland Indians as a coach/clown in the late 40's. Patkin was once a pitcher, but hurt his arm, and since I hear it's difficult to leave baseball he developed a gimmick. I like him.
Out of curiosity, what DOES it take to entertain you?
I could be entertained by The Clown Prince of Baseball for a while. He'll come out between innings, move in some interesting ways, maybe make some funny faces or whatever. Sounds like fun.
It's not high comedy, but do we always need high comedy to be entertained? Plus, I bet you are underestimating him. He's a real person with real notoriety, not a fictional creation. The guy became known for a reason. Clearly a lot of people are entertained by him.
