Baseball movie vs. Romantic movie

I was reading the original thread "Susan Sarandon ruined this movie." It contained quite a bit of bluster which apparently annoyed some people :

"I like minor league baseball so I wanted to see a good minor league baseball movie where I get to know a lot about the players. I did not get that with this movie what I got was old bag Susan Sarandon running around being annoying in almost every scene fighting over 2 guys..... This all should have been minimized anyway because like I said I wanted to see more of the baseball and less sex stuff."

In his own way, the guy (Trickgum) makes a point. The movie does seem to clash between the minor league baseball comedy, and the other, a romantic comedy about the woman having affairs with various players. I do have to agree that the movie is at its most entertaining on the baseball field... some really funny stuff. But when Susan Sarandon gets involved, the film sort of bogs down. Even becomes kind of tedious and boring. But I don't think that the movie could've worked completely without the sexual subplots. It sort of drives all the characters, even if it does get in the way of the fun.

Ultimately I do agree with the guy who wanted a baseball movie. But I do believe that the film wouldn't work without some plot twists that involved the Susan Sarandon character. Perhaps they could have cut or edited several scenes that involved Susan, but not all. What do you think?

I think it is the combination of the two genres here that makes this movie a classic, that helps it stand the test of time. Although a baseball season is the backdrop for the narrative, this movie isn't really a baseball movie. It's telling a more enriching story than just a story about a team winning or not winning or about a group of funny characters. That's in there, but so is William Blake, so is the relationship between the town and it's minor-league team, so are the hopes and dreams and experiences of every minor-league player.

I first watched this movie in 1989, and not once have I ever been bored during it. I am truly not sure how anyone could be.

Those are my thoughts, anyway. Sorry I'm responding three years after you first posted.
