Longer Version

Does anyone know where I can find the 104 minute version of this film? Its been one of my favourite cult classics since I first saw it on HBO in the early 90s. Until today, I didn't know anything about a longer more downbeat ending. Please help!

I had the same problem, loved the film had the full version on vhs, then got hold of a version of the dvd only to find the ending cut!

There is a dvd of salute. You just don't know where to look

reply

Please tell :)

I have the Region 4 Australian DVD, but it was the shorter version even though it had the right title.

I bought a DVD just yesterday (would you believe I paid only 2.99 Euro ?). The title is Salute OT Jugger, so I hope it's the long version.

Trece para siempre.

Damnit, it's only 90 minutes and I do think it's the one with the cut ending.

I seem to remember (from the last time I saw it) that after they win, they are told that Gar and Kidda will both be drafted by the league. In this version the movie kind of ends right after Kidda puts the dog skull on the stick. Kidda, Gar and Mbulu are shown talking to the Red team coach, which could imply he's interested in drafting them, but that's it. A bit of an abrupt ending, if you ask me...

So be warned, the title SOTJ alone is no guarantee for 104 minutes of fun.

Trece para siempre.

I also understand that the picture quality is poor (i.e. dark) and it does not come with the widescreen version as it was presented in the theatres. Poor play on Lion Gate's part! Any thoughts on how to get through to them and have a proper release?

reply

There is a lot more missing than just the ending. And the missing parts destroy the movie. Off the top of my head heres the missing parts

1. Dogboy doesnt say 'And when I'm healed I'll see you in Colca... well, I'll ask which way you headed'

2. ALL the overlord scene of the tax paying incident is cut.. totally!! This is where thy kick Dogboy and Sallow says 'He got the skull' .. then they are warned not to go to Colca cos of the giant 1-eye.

3. When they show editted scenes of games, they miss out on a superb scene where they win in under 10 stones and Gar says 'We won cos we are too good... we are like a League team'. Then Ghandi laughs and they go on to say the differences.

4. At the end of the Red City match they cut one of the best scenes of all!! Sallow has kicked Gonzos butt, and he helps him up and Gonzo says 'I forgot you were better than me'

5. They cut the interaction between Mbulu and Sallow, telling him they asked him to stay and during the next point the hug forehead to forehead

6. They cut another of the best when Gonzo asks what the overlords are going to do with sallow and they say 'Nothing. Imagine a Jugger like him playing the Dogtowns'. And Gonzo spits viciously.

7. They cut another great scene of seeing Kidda in silk with the League tatoo on her forehead with tears in her eyes seeing Sallow and Ana walking away. Scene ends with her opeing her hand and we see the mother of pearl shell.

8. And lastly we see sallow interacting with his new quick and the all too aussie accent of 'Maybe they wont come.' etc. We see sallow breaking in his new quick and he doesnt wear the eye-patch and we see the sealed eye. Theres fog and the opposing juggers appear in the distance in a menacing manner and Sallow looks mean at them and spits. End.

Theres no comparison between the 2. The shorter version's editting destroys the movie and I can well and truly agree with the low score here. The shorter version also took the best human interaction and heart out of it.

For a while there, I was really interested in seeing the longer cut of the movie. While I'm dispapointed the DVD is in full-frame (growl) instead of the proper wide-screen, I'm fairly content.

The uncut version you describe sounds poorly scripted; the missing dialogue in particular shouldn't be lamented upon. Talk about cheesy! Whomever cut the film did so well and justly, the US version is plenty good on its own.

reply

Well from all appearances from the boards, you seem to be in a minority if you 'assume' the longer version is not worth it. You are also making an assumption saying the script from the longer is 'cheesy'. I seriously suggest that you watch a full copy of the movie then you can understand where I and a lot of others are coming from.

As the saying goes- 'A picture tells a thousand words'. You would be in a far stronger position to state your case when lamenting on the missing dialogue and making a judgement on the disparity between the two.

Having finally seen the longer version, I have to say most of this is much ado about nothing. I suspose like many things if it was the first version you saw it would be the one that would feel "normal" to you. But I think the additions/changes pretty much balanced out with about half improvements, and half things that SHOULD have been dropped. In particular some of the additions suffer from being overly obvious -- I think its much more powerful when a message or emotion is implied by a look shared between two people, by reading between the lines, than it is to just throw out a clumsy line of dialogue.

Of all of the changes in the longer version, the two scenes I liked for an alternate longer version were two of the post-fight scenes where Salo finds out that Mbulu will be staying and the two old warriors say goodbye, and then where Kidda is watching Salo and Ana walking away. That was all that was needed. Not cheesy dialogue and excessive clumsy explanations.

The shorter version has the advantage of leaving more unsaid but still implied -- you know that Gar thinks the team is as good as a league team, you know that Gar has made a fool of himself in front of the review board, you know that Dogboy may never see Salo again, you know that Salo is better than Gonzo, and you can see the mutual respect in the little half smiles they exchange after the fight is over. And you know there is no happy ending for Salo, nor did he go looking for one really. He got his redemption by defying his old nemesis and winning. Its all there, but not blurted out clumsily. Sometimes things are better left unsaid. Outside of Salo having to say goodbye to the team and leave back to his life of wandering, and the poetic last shot of Kidda watching him go, not much there in the longer version that should be terribly missed.

It is a cult classic, looking forward to a full version. So many other movies are getting their original versions out as well. Fingers crossed

Well, Ive finally seen some of the longer version. A friend of mine has a dubbed copy of it. I have to say that Im pretty content with the shorter version myself. Part of the reason I love this movie is that it's inspiring though it's just another "Rocky"-type movie. Like others have said in this thread, the extra stuff is pretty much unnecessary. Most of what's missing is already implied by the story and action. It moves faster without it. That's what good actors can do for a movie. That's why this stuff can be cut and not missed. You've got well-known actors like Hauer, Delroy Lindo, Joan Chen and Vincent D'Onofrio (Law & Order, Full_Metal Jacket) and a decent story.

It still would have been nice to have those deleted scenes on a dvd with some production notes about the making of the movie and its two versions. Those are the most dvd extras you can expect from a genre movie like this. The original ending was nice too and I wish they had kept it.

reply

Sorry mate but your so wrong ...the longer cut is definately the better one,the added dialogue and the cut scenes turns a good film into a great film

reply

This movie is a favorite of mine. Ive got dubbed a copy of a rental. Its shame the dvd versions that have been offered are of inferior quality. I hear the vhs version is better. That's unheard of. This movie deserves better. Ive never seen the full version. Even the video guides never mention that there's a longer version. I think the 90 m is great but now Im really interested in seeing the extra footage. Should be a cult classic. It seems to be cut by American film standards by what you described. Very upbeat "Rocky" ending. Excess removed for pacing.

You are rigth in all accounts, I just got "Blood of Heroes" by accident, I never even knew that there was a shorter version out! (other than versions where the brutality was cit out to make it "clean" for TV of course).

I can add another missing scene:

9. When they trying to get the attention of the league and the headmasters are checking the skulls, Young Gar is performing some action with his chain. He goes back to the others. Whats missing now: I remember that he is asking them "How was I, eh?" and Ghandi answers: "It doesn't really matter. All that counts are the skulls!".

Thats not really THAT important, but otoh why cut this out? To gain 5 seconds? It did explain what ws going on, I would never have ut THAT!

Then again I do believe that the shorter version has one bigger scene that isnt in Salute! At least, when I saw the shorter version recently, it seemed to new to my eyes that used to see the "Jugger" (german title) so many times in my youth:
Dogboy is hurt but still part of the team and Kidda is pursueing them. She already said she want to join once but got refused. Then you'll have a scene that I cannot remember to be in the longer version, the entire team is sitting by a campfire and Ghandi is telling stories from the past when he was an active player himself. Somethong about a guy placing the skull on the wrong stick. They are all having fun but poor Kidda has to watch them from distance, alone and freezing.
A very good scene that is giving even more depth.

All in all the shorter version is inferior but I have to say this: The scene dexcribed above is great and should have been in the longer version, too, while IF I had to cut some minutes, I would have cut the scene with the taxmen! The tank is looking stupid (and you don't see it moving - because that vehicle can't), its a bit exaggerated that he takes just ALL of their money and so on. This is the only scene that makes the impression as if it was a typical B-Movie.

reply

I'm watching it on HBO right now, and the scene you discribe with the team around the fire is in this version.

I bought recently two versions of this great movie on Ebay. One, an english Tape and a Dutch Dvd. Both are named "The Salute of the Jugger". The tape is version is
complete (I mean, the ending is here, the after-match) and the Dvd is good quality, really image and sound. But full screen and the ENS is missing for a reason I don't get......I don't understand what is up with this movie. The end is neither gore, neither....nothing. I just don't get it, why did they on quite all versions cut it ????? to gain 5 minutes !!!

PS. I also have a french tape, named "le sang des héros"....that is cut !!!!

I bought the VHS from Amazon.com sellers thinking that I was getting the version to which Siit referred, but it was the same 91-minute version that I already had on DVD!

I watched this movie on the US VHS tape release about a dozen times, but it must have been the shorter version. I don't recognize any of the bits that are missing, as noted above.

Sounds like the US DVD release is the same as the VHS, at least in terms of the print used.

I didn't even know there had been a DVD release until yesterday. This one came in under the radar.

The uncut German DVD seems to be the full version, running 99 min PAL which adds up to 104 min NTSC. It has English soundtrack too. Watch out for the version that says "ungekürzte Fassung!" (uncut version) on the cover and is rated 18+.

Plenty of releases of the longer version around, some are listed here: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=9393

I just watched it on a hire dvd on an English R1 dvd player (albeit unlocked) and it lasted for 106 minutes. Sadly its derivative plot and murky cinematography didn't excite but Joan Chen was a welcome diversion. Rutger looked as though he was making a film elsewhere and dropped in on this one when it wasn't raining.

Marlon, Claudia and Dimby the cats 1989-2005, 2007 and 2010.

I've seen both and you're not missing out on much with the longer version. It's obvious even at the end of the shorter one from all of the upper crust men and women going and whispering in their ears that the team is going to get sucked into the league. The extra ten minutes don't tell you anything that isn't already implied in the shorter ending, so don't fuss about it.
