Just got the limited edition Twilight Time Blu-Ray. Anybody else did?

Ordered it on the 16th and it got delivered last Thursday, but I only just got to sit down to watch it for the first time last night (until 2:30 in the morning no less). It is a good clean transfer if I must say. Here is what I liked about it...

1 - Sharp, sharp picture. Noticed a few things that I didn't before like Shawnee Smith's character crying as she lays in bed looking at her snow globe.
2 - The "Cinefamily" extra. Very interesting.

Here is what I didn't like about it...
1 - Not enough extras. Oh come on! They should have STUFFED this bastard with a TON of extras, especially with deleted scenes. But noooooooooooooo! They had to give us a couple of crumbs more than the nearly bare bones-like DVD version. How cheap!
2 - The audio commentary. Don't get me wrong, there was some good trivia tidbits here. In fact I watched it all the way through with just this track, no dialogue or subtitles present (its alright, I knew what they were saying in the movie, after all this was my, what, 55th time or so seeing this flick). But to me it seemed like for the most part Chuck Russell and Ryan Turek just talked about how Russell came about to getting the movie made. More details like how the actors look back at this and what ever became of some of the props, etc. would have been nice.

In all this is not a bad version. Is it worth having? My answer is yes, it is definitely worth owning. My one bitch is that they just should have added in more. MUCH more.

Mine just arrived today, just finished watching it. It has an acceptable and pleasing transfer, though nothing earth shattering. It reminds me of when I first saw it in the theatre back in early 1989.

Extras wise, I'm happy for the commentary. Sadly though there was probably not a lot of archival footage created for the film or of if there was, not much would have been retained as home releases with large supplements weren't really thought of at that time as laser disc was a niche product at best back then and DVD was a long way off.

As for creating new content, well, studios these days are reticent about creating supplements for films that were only a moderate success due to the costs involved in creating them. This release will only ever be considered a niche release in comparison with a big budget success like Jaws or Star Wars for example.

In fact, if you look at the bluray release of Star Wars, the supplements on that are very average in comparison to the DVD release of 2007. Studios these days seem to be doing less and less good work in the supplement regard compared to the peak of the DVD era.

To those who have the blu-ray version, what resolution is it? 720p? 1080i? 1080p? Other?
Update
If I want your opinion, I'll GIVE it to you.

reply

1:85:1 Aspect Ratio, 1080p AVC encoded transfer.

And if I might add 5.1 DTS sound. But another gripe... only one subtitled language - English. The DVD version had 6 - yes 6 - languages! Why only one this time?

Found out today that The Blob Twilight Time Blu-ray is already sold out. Makes me feel glad that I got my copy when I did!!!

It's sold out and going for $80 a copy right now.

This "limited edition" crap pisses me off to no end. Not everyone has the cash to drop right when it goes on pre-order, and then by the time you have it, it's already sold out. This has happened to me more than once.

Obviously if people like me want it and can't afford it at $80 a copy, there was more demand for it than a few thousand copies, but of course unless we're rich, now we'll never get to own it even though we'd be happy to pay a fair retail price for it.

Twilight Time, Code Red, Synapse, and all these other companies seriously need to cut this crap out.

Well put there halcyonsummer. Like I said I am glad I got my copy when I did. When I ordered the movie the Twilight Time site said that they increased the amount of copies to 5000 because of demand! I expected it to sell, but still I did not even think it would sell out THIS damn fast!

Well I did manage to snag a used copy on eBay for $50, which is still more than I've spent on any one movie, but this is one of my all-time favorite 80s movies so I couldn't pass it up. Here's hoping it isn't scratched when I get it. The seller says he only watched it once. It's just ridiculous that we fans of these films either have to have cash on reserve for when these things go on pre-order or risk not being able to buy them unless we have some serious cash to drop later on. It's upsetting how many movies I've wanted that I can't afford because of this limited edition of 3000 crap. Like most people, I can't justify spending $100 on one movie. I'm just glad I managed to get this one, even if $50 is still a lot for one title.

^^Same. I ordered mine late and paid out the ass for it. But what the hell. I love this movie.

reply

Ditto.

Overpaid (just now) from Amazon, but I love this film.

Had no idea it had come out on Blu-ray, let alone in a friggin' limited edition.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

I jumped on this as soon as I could. It's one of my absolute favorites that I watched all the time as a kid. Sadly, I missed out on other limited release blu rays like the original Fright Night and Christine. I just don't see why they can't print more once they've sold out. Obviously there's a demand for them.

I'm a little late to the party, but mine arrived yesterday and I just finished watching it. I loved this movie as a kid in the late 80's and the Blu Ray looks and sounds fantastic. Shawnee is a top flight heroine in this and Kevin is terriffic too. Well worth paying the little extra I did from a seller on eBay. Now I can fire this up anytime I want to.

I must be the only person on Earth who can't stand audio commentary. I can't watch a film and listen to someone talking in the background, it's too much like having someone chatting in the seat behind you in the cinema.

Oh gravity, thou art a heartless bitch!

reply

I see what you mean weejockxx. I don't mind audio commentary, but it depends on what movie it is. If the commentators just ramble on, then that is what I don't like. But if they start giving some good behind the scenes tidbits, then I will listen.
