Who else busted out laughing?
While this remake has some quality horrific scenes, like when the protagonist's boyfriend, Paul, buys the farm in the doctor's office, which is one of the greatest horror scenes in cinematic history. As well as the semi-shocking scene where someone we don't expect to die is hideously consumed by the creature in the sewers.
Despite this, the film sometimes cops a semi-parody vibe, like when the cook at the diner is yanked upside down into a sink by the creature or when Erika Eleniak (in a too-brief role) buys the farm playing some kid's car date. I couldn't help busting out laughing at these scenes and a couple of others. Were the filmmaker's intentionally shooting for camp here? definitely.
So it's a weird mix, switching from utter horror to amusing non-horror, which I think makes the film less effective than the original. But I still like it; it's entertaining.
