Other movies like this, The Fly and The Thing?
The Blob, The Fly and The Thing are, for me, pretty much the holy trinity of horror. Such incredible practical sfx, very tense and in places genuinely disturbing. Can anyone recommend some similar films in terms of both special effects and good story-telling. I would say Hellraiser 1 and 2 come close in terms of atmosphere and visuals (although they have some pretty weak acting, and H2 looks great but doesn't have much in the way of story/characterisation). Of course there are cheaper thrills like Basketcase, which is fun but lacks the sophistication of The Fly/Thing/Blob. Evil Dead has a very comedic take on the genre while these films play it straight and are better for it. Finally there is Planet Terror which the opening of The Blob very much reminded me of (with its ironic retro feel).
Any suggestions for more horror along the lines of these films?
