I was wondering the same thing and I tried to research the real-life "Epstein" character years ago. I presumed the name was fictitious but a prominent NYC District Attorney feared by organized crime should have been fairly easy to track down. So I thought. No one name really jumped out.
He might have been attorney Roy Cohn (about the right age) and known and feared for his aggressive anti-communist campaigns with Senator McCarthy. As a side note, he was suspected towards the end of his life of being gay (and died from AIDS).
