They had to make him a Naive 12 Year Old otherwise it wouldn't work. If he was sexually advanced, and over video games/toys etc., He never would've made that wish. And there would be no movie. He also wouldn't be so innocent with Elizabeth Perkins. And they couldn't make him younger because that would be way too pedophile-ish. If he was more savvy it would be a different story.
