I realize this was made back in the late 1980's but this has got to be the dumbest, lamest and most unbelievable movie I've ever seen!
I was born and raised in the South. Yes, we distrust big government (we all should by now!), we carry guns (for hunting game and target practice), and yes, people do use the "N" word, but no more than what you'd hear in the typical rap song.
This movie stereotypes people in the South worse than any movie I've ever seen. Hunting blacks? In the 1980's? Gimme a freaking break!
In all my 50+ years of living here I have never- NEVER- met or heard of a Klan member. And we don' go around using ridiculous phrases like "ZOG" or ramble on about how Jews or blacks "take in the butt".
This movie was so damn insulting on so many levels I could write all night. People in the South typically love the Jewish people b/c they are seen as God's Chosen Nation. Some people may disagree but that hardly makes us anti-Semitic.
Most of us work and live close to blacks and we sure as hell don't hunt them down with automatic weapons (we use shotguns- JUST KIDDING!!!). Most of the killing of blacks is black on black crime.
I like Tom Beringer and Winger but this was sickening and insulting to watch.
Hogwash! Movie was spot on...especially depicting the south in that time period; I've been down South (1980's) and indeed those words and racial attitudes were spoken and dripped off the tongues of old and young alike. Today, southerners are more careful about letting go with the epithets in public, but believe me a lot of the racist overtones and feelings remained......along with white supremacist attitudes maintained by the Klan and Tea Party groups...
You're an idiot! I've lived here my entire life & it doesn't "drip off the tongues of old & young alike".
Using actual FBI statistics the highest percentage of hate crimes were committed in Northern states!
Using their Incidents per 100K table Washington D.C> is near the top at 6.00; New Jersey is at 6.31; Minnesota 5.97; Massachusetts 5.05; Delaware 4.18 and Oregon is at 5.45.
Now checking some Southern states: Tennessee 2.68; Mississippi .24; South Carolina 2.72; Alabama .28; Arkansas 2.72; Georgia .14.
So you can try & use anecdotal evidence (which is nothing more than your opinion) but I'm relying on actual FBI stats.
So take your hateful & bigoted commentary elsewhere. It sounds like you are the one with the tolerant issue!
YOU are a lair. Yes, I called you a LIAR. I don't even believe you've been in the south. And what with the Tea Party bit ? #1 way to tell you're a liar.
Anyway, to others that wanna talk truth and reality, even in the 50s/60s the majority of southerners didn't mis treat 'blacks' as they off the wall movies depict. 'Talk' and attitudes do not equal murder. I grew up in the north and I can tell ya, I was called 'whitey', was beaten for being a 'white boy' and there were sections of the city, I as a free tax payin' American could not walk through because I was white. Do I hate black people 'cause of this ? Of course not. Every town has its loud mouthed, tough buy bigots - be the white or black. This movie should be seen by anyone who isn't a far left whack job. You will learn what goes through the minds when they think of rural white American. Paranoid and delusional. Hell, if it was truly like this I would agree that guns should be confiscated !! But its not. Watchin' this movie will help you understand the mentality that wants to take away citizens legally owned guns. This movie is disgusting. I sat through the first 30 mins, mouth agape, in disbelief at what I was hearing/seeing. What sh*t writing, the dialogue is so lame that I can't believe anyone reading it would have anything to do with the movie. Winger and Berringer are either whores or morons (or both). Movies like this will spur a new generation to re write history yet again. I bet panson was born either around the time this movie was made or later - now he/she things he/she is an expert on racism in the USA. To anyone that thinks the 80s were even remotely like this, is shockingly ill informed. Ever hear of disco ? That was the late 70s ... hip hop ?? The 80s ... If you'e not a kid panson, you owe an apology to those you attempted to mis lead. And for the record, yes. many of my best friends ARE 'black' (a word I can't stand having to use still).
You're the Liar, you big mouth right winged fascist! I know for a fact you NEVER lived down South, where black Americans were treated like trash and dirt....and they did talk like that you fool; I know...I saw it FIRST HAND when we traveled down South in the 60's to help organize Civil Rights Rallies...They also killed and hung blacks as well...you probably denied that the Holocaust ever existed as well. Of course, you'll also lie about the Klan and the David Dukes having exist as well. I'm 66 years old, so you don't bs me, with your pathetic LIES and DISTORTION of history, you pathetic LIAR.
You obviously have a pathological hatred of Southern White people.
Lynchings were an unfortunate chapter in American history, but more often than not they were acts of vigilantism rather than random killings of blacks. (A fact often overlooked.)
This is ridiculous. I came up here thinking people were going to complain about how ridiculous an FBI agent was romantically involved with her suspect. I live northern Virginia, I have a friend who lives close to the West Virginia boarder. She tells me stories of how racist they are. She's White, the father of her child who has two other baby mothers left her. She still stays in contact with him and tries to help him because he's the father of her child. Anyways while he's in jail she starts dating someone else, this guy happens to be Black, everyone has a fit, calls her trash yada yada. My point racism is still alive and this board is proof. This vigilante is complete hog wash. Open up a book it may be ugly but it's true.
My White friends don't get bent out of shape over history then again they're not racist.
Um, the problem with your whole diatribe was that the movie didn't take place in the south. It took place in the Midwest. Y'know, near Chicago and near Montana? Yeah, that part of the country. NOT the south.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.
I think the OP and the subsequent tirade war over the "South" was in reference to how real events as depicted in the movie, actually occurred.
Yes, this is a brilliant film, not an easy one to view.
The general public may not have acted the way Gary and his thugs act in the film, but there were a select few people (Mississippi Burning, anyone?) that went out for blacks, Jews, and other Social Justice types. Because it was so far removed or happened involving rich white men, it was overlooked.
Not just an unfortunate chapter. And nor is it over, either... Just changed forms.
