Game-changing plot twist that COULD'VE happened off-screen.

We all know at the beginning of the movie that Jane keeps pestering the Maitlands (and apparently has been for a while up to that point) to sell their house and even went as far as sending photos without consent to another family. Then the BIG plot twist..... after pestering Barbara and Adam this last time, as she drives away off screen, she could've been the one to set the dog out and forced them to crash their car. She was so adamant in selling that house that she could've done whatever it took to get it to where she could sell it. I mean, it DID go on the market (and sell) pretty quick after the Maitland's deaths....

That would be a cool plot point. Though she ends up leaving the movie after the Deetzes move in.

That would have been a great twist, but I think its pretty clear she's not the one who sold the house. Remember when she pulls up after the Deetzes are remodeling, she introduces herself to Lydia, gives her card as well as the skeleton key. Obviously they had never met before, and if she had been doing business with them, then Charles would already have her number, and she probably would already have been around.

Bare in mind we have no idea how long it was after their deaths and Adam and Barbara returned to the house, and how long they were alone in the house.

When Jane first starts pestering Barbara, she said she had a real offer from a man in New York City who only saw a photo of the house. As Jane drives away from the house after mourning their loss, a "For Sale by Jane Butterfield - SOLD" sign is shown swinging in the wind.

Plus when she introduces herself to Lydia, it could be that she only met the parents and then Lydia later on and just then was able to give the skeleton key
