Question about the model

This might sound like a dumb question, but just want to make sure I am not crazy or what are other people's takes.

I know they can't leave the house and go outside, so the model they have is supposed to be their only way to go anywhere outside of the house, like the graveyard for example? I am confused by why Beetlejuice is in the model graveyard (and other places) and comes out of the ground in the model before they even dig him up. He says he is trapped in the model and can't get out without his name being said 3 times. But I am just curious why he is stuck in the model in the first place. Did I miss something?

Thanks for any answers you can give me!

Beetlegeuse wasn't trapped inside the model at all. He was lying about that so he could con Lydia into saying his name three times. The Maitlands where sucked into the model probably by Beetlejuice as some sort of odd game Beetleguese liked to play.

I think the real question to ask here us why are the Mairlands bound to spend the next few hundred years in their own home while Beetleguese seems to be able to travel anywhere... Hence to the Maitlands when he figures they'd be stupid enough to be his .... Victims?

He's been dead for more than 200 years.
