Lydia's parents

I find The Deetz were funny as hell, even funnier than Beetlejuice. just look at Charles and Delia's funny face, and their attitude. They are my all time favourite funny characters.
and i love Catherine O'Hara in this, she was baddass!

reply

Agreed! I love most of Catherine O'Hara's work and this is no exception!

reply

Oh, yeah. She is just awesome! One of the funnies comediennes in the world I think. Jeffrey is also funny as hell (and he has a good face, I always love watching him). I have always loved catherine since i saw her for the first time in Home alone at age 4 or something. I think the first film i saw with jeffrey was Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I love him there! They are both just great :D

I loved Lydia's parents in the animated series, but couldn't stand Delia in this movie, when Otho said "Don't mind her, she's just upset because someone dropped a house on her sister," and Delia started laughing, my immediate next thought was, "And now her sister's laughing about it." That aside, Catherine O'Hara did excellent work in this role, it just seems she gets type castings for 'basket-case mother figure', and while the character may not always be likable, I love her for the way she plays them.

I wonder who Lydia's REAL mother was...

"I wonder who Lydia's REAL mother was...'

How could one ever determine that? They're all fictional characters. If the attributable writers haven't said so in the story then we can never know. I don't think that the writers can simply add that fact in an after the fact statement. It would not be canonical.

We'll never know. But we could make guesses. Why do Charles and Delia have custody? Mother may be deceased. Maybe that's why Lydia is OK with the dead and with dying.

But does it really make sense to discuss imaginary fiction?

I was just making a statement. God forbid we use our imagination! You're annoying! Ignored...

Someone people like to do that, it's obvious you don't so why don't you go ahead and butt out of this conversation?

Whoever Lydia's real mother was she had to have been the complete opposite of Delia. Maybe that's why Lydia doesn't really like her.

"Someone [sic] people like to do that, it's obvious you don't so why don't you go ahead and butt out of this conversation?"

Because it constitutes asking a perfectly logical, relevant question, and I "like to do that".

"Obvious you don't"--really? Need I remind you that what I wrote was a question, not an assertion? And need I remind you that I did actually discuss the question as put.

Re your answer to the question as put: I don't think it's likely that her father would marry the "complete opposite" of his previous choice for a wife and companion.

Absolutely and it's also great fun! What isn't so are the poeple saying "it's a movie", "it's not real", "it's fiction" like fans aren't aware. Sure it's all make-believe but why can't we elaborate on what isn't real?

We've met before, haven't we?

reply

Why do Charles and Delia have custody? I always assumed Lydia's mum had died maybe three years ago and Delia was the second wife.

Also, just realised both Winona Ryder and Jeffrey Jones were in The Crucible!

Beryl was Delia's sister?

reply

Otho was making a joke, comparing Beryl to The Wicked Witch of the West. That's why Delia was laughing.

"I must express myself." - Delia Deetz

Maybe you can fit the entire line in you sig, but ere it is, and I love it:

Delia: I will live with you [Charles] in this hellhole, but I must express myself. If I can't, I will go insane, and I WILL TAKE YOU WITH ME!
Charles: [momentarily stunned] Let's just leave this room alone, okay?
Delia: Kay.

What do you guys mean by was? I always get bothered by movies that kill off the mother but leave the father to alive to raise the kids alone or with a stepmother, couldn't her parents just be divorced? Divorce was actually fairly high in the eighties, and Charles said, "Go bait your mother Okay?" and also, "Your mother's going to kill you when she finds you cut holes in her $300 sheets." the audience at this point doesn't know Delia is a stepmother, and they aren't supposed to know that, plus Charles insistance on "mother" he may not mean Delia, it could also allude to Lydia's mother still being alive.

Hey---Maybe Charles was having an affair with Delia so the couple divorced, and had joint custody for awhile, and Lydia went to the country with Delia and Charles at the start of the movie!

There is no reason not to believe her mother is not still alive----because if she were dead, would she not get access to the afterlife and the Maitland's home for unfinished business?
