They had smiles on their faces as they went through the ceiling... your guess is as good as mine. I love this movie and wonder what happened to them myself. Did BJ actually 'exorcize the living' on them? Maybe Burton should have included them in the waiting room with Beetlejuice in the end. Or maybe they just landed on the top floor? or above floor? Who knows.

They were smiling because they didn't realize at that exact moment what was about to happen to them. They were just thinking how amazing it all was. In the movie (unlike the cartoon) Beetlejuice is the bad guy, so I think the implication is they did in fact die and then go to the neitherworld.

Well to be technical, in real life, Maxie Dean---Robert Goulet died in 2007.
