the ending scene,

So what exactly did Winona tell Alec Baldwin that she wanted to do at the end? When she says she got a good grade on her science test and said "So can I do it now?" or whatever it was. Then she proceeds to float up in the air and sing.

"Make me float in the air so I can sing The Banana Boat song by Harry Belafonte while dead football players sing behind me?"

She wanted the Maitlands to "possess" her like they did to the party guests in the dinner scene. During the dinner party, they didn't make Lydia dance and sing like the adults, but she found it to look fun, so her reward for doing well in school was that they possessed her so she could sing and dance, too.

It would be fun to float.

Yeah, we watched this again 2 nights ago and during the table scene... we see Lydia on the far right smiling and laughing as the whole thing is going on! So yeah, she wanted in on some ghost magic fun too...

I get that it's fun to float in mid air but why sing to Harry Belafonte's "Jump in the Line" with a dead football team as your backup singers?

If I were in the position I'd probably just ask "Can you make me float in the air?" and not "Make me float in the air and sing to old songs"

It's just funny to imagine her asking the ghost that. "Hey so if I get an A on my tests can you do something for me?" "Sure, what is it?"

"Well, can you make me float up in the air while I sing the song Jump In the Line by Belafonte and use his real voice while a group of dead football players act as my backup singers?"

"Uhh, well, sure. As long as you get good grades. That's a pretty strange scenario but if you get good grades, why not?"

Haha!

‘Hey Adam, Barbara, if I get an A in Chemistry as well, could you make me levitate upside down, naked, in a foetal position, with James Brown blaring out of my asshole?’

‘Err...’

Ok the movie didn't completely explain the magic the dead have. The Maitlands used some and so did Beetlejuice... the cartoon explained it a 'little' better.... and how often they can use it too... they were just using their magic to not only HEAR the music but bring sone of the ghosts (football team) to dance with her and (as the song suggets) "jump up in the air and come down in slow motion" and that's what they were doing with Lydia! It was just silly but fun and gave the Maitlands the chance to use some of their new ghost magic as well.

It kind of means that Beetlejuice will start all over again and Lydia gets to dance on the ceiling with her football-playing ghost friends!

reply

At least he'll see some familiar faces, but Beetlejuice has to start all over again!
