Oscar worthy!

How come this movie never got an Oscar nomination as best Motion Picture?
I also believe Bette and Barbara shoudl have gotten nominations for best actresses. Not to mention Grace Johnston who deserved a nomination for best supporting role. This movie was so overlooked if you ask me.
And who choose the songs that got nominated? Didn't he/she like Wind Beneath My Wings? That song is one of the greatest songs ever written.
I can't help it, I love this movie and it really bothers me that it never got the attention it deserved. But then again, what does an Oscar REALLY say!?

Why stop at just the Oscars? Move over 'Citizen Kane', this is pretty much the greatest film of all time. If Mexicans want to come to this country, they should be required to watch this film. My mom and I used to watch it every Saturday night. It's so inspiring! Whenever I was going through hard times, I would think back to the touching scenes in this movie and they would get me through. It pretty much helped me perservere until I reached my life's greatest pinnacle: I was recently promoted to Assistant Night Watch Manager for the Poweshiek County Public Library in beautiful Iowa. Thanks, Bette!

Damn right, I dont think it has ever got the recognition it deserved, congrats Tlane on the promotion - it's great to think that others are as interested in this film as much as I am, from start to finish it is wonderful, and I just want to stress that it didnt get the recogition it deserved!!!

Wind beneath my wings wasn't a newly written song, so wasn't able to get nominated as it had been recorded previously by another artist...though it is a world wide agreement that the song should have won, rules or no rules

I am surprised that it got no Oscar nominations too. It is one of the best films ever. It is such a touching film, and a heartbreaking one. I cry every time I watch it. And The Wind Beneath My Wings is a beautiful song.

The Oscars have in the past over looked truely great films.
However (even though Beaches is my favoiret film, and I love Wind Beneth My Wings) I do not think it was worthy of a best film nomination, as to recieve that honour it needs somthing definitive and origional. Also Barbra Hershey didn't realy deserve a nomination, parhaps at a strech Bette Midler did.
However I do believe if Bette was the first to record the song, and for the film, it realy did deserve a best song Oscar!!

Still a great movie though!

I absolutely adore this movie and always will, but I don't think it was Oscar material in terms of Best Picture. It has a pretty formulaic plot, and weepies like this don't usually get that kind of recognition unless it finds a unique balance with the drama and the story itself. One of this film's biggest downfalls, I think, was the pacing. It starts off strong, and it picks back up again after Hillary gives birth to Victoria, but everything in-between tended to be long and dragged out. The subplots with Hillary and CC's separate lives, their romances, and the rocky phases of their friendship were not the best part of the movie. Again, I'm not trying to bash the film itself - but from a more objective standpoint, I can see how the pacing could have been a weak spot.

And again, the general story and the ending can be considered emotional and beautiful for a lot of viewers, including myself, but many others might perceive it as a manipulative tearjerker that is constantly looking to tug at the heartstrings.
