Scene With The Taxi Driver

I know when this first came out on video, a friend of mine explained the scene, but in the years that followed, I managed to forget.

When Adrian asks the driver to follow Jack, what is the driver yelling? The language gap gets in the way. Was Adrian suspected of being one of the secret police? And by the time this movie took place, weren't they done away with?

reply

I may be wrong, but I suspect it was "Malvinas", which I believe is the Argentinean term for the Falkland Islands. Adrian has an obvious British accent so this was my assumption...

OK, but if he was a Malvina, why would the taxi driver be doing that and drawing all that attention?

The Taxi driver, detecting the British accent of Adrian and put off by his arrogance, shouts Malvina! Malvina! That's the Argentinian's name for the Falkland Islands. The war Argentina lost to the Brits.
And yes in 1988 the military thing was over but that's a the center of Hart Bochner's predicament. He is stranded in the city where he killed so many people. He has been abandoned. He needs a way out.

The taxi driver as some argentinians was still angry cause they lost the Islas Malvinas. Taken away by the brits. So when the british guy asks him to follow the car the driver ask if it's a political matter and beguns to say out loud MALVINAS!! MLAVINAS!! as a reminder like 'why should i help you if u r a brit?
