Why have so many people voted this a 1?

I just saw the movie and was very impressed for the most part. The first half of the film is more compelling than the second half in my opinion but it ranks a solid 7, maybe even an 8. I'm curious to know if anybody on these boards gave it a 1 and if so, why?

I ask myself the same question and the only possible answer is that the film requires something from you. Not everyone is willing to give. Look at the quantity of 1 for Brokeback Mountain.

I think I gave Brokeback about a 3. I don't hate gays at all. The movie simply just sucked. The only reason people give it so much praise is because it's so contreversial. This movie here looks cool, I'll look for it at the rental store.

Brokeback was boring and stupid. Furthermore, I don't think it's doing the gays any favors. Who would want to be identified with the characters? They cheat and lie to their families. They confuse lust with love. There was never any love in BBM. Just selfishness and lust. If I were gay, I would rather hold up a movie I could relate to, that would inspire me, and portray me in a positive light. BBM just demeans gays and perpetuates the same old stereotypes. It's the movie that you would expect from Hollywood, lacking both insight and value.

"I think a lot of folks vote 1 for "Brokeback Mountain" because they hate gays. Just like a lot of folks vote 1 for "Basic Instinct 2" because they hate Sharon Stone."

No, we gave Brokeback Mountain a "1", because we didn't like it. We gave Basic Instinct 2 a "1", because WE did not like it. Why is it so hard to accept that people like different things? I'm sure there are some popular movies, that you didn't like. I'm sure there are some unpopular movies that you like. Leave the psycho-analysis out of your arguments. I liked the first Basic Instinct. It is trashy, but well-made and deeper than it's given credit for. Camille Paglia, a feminist icon, regards it as her favorite movie. We all like different things. Don't read too much into ratings. It makes you look elitist and silly.

I have no problem with movies about gays. I loved Our Lady of the Assassins and Gregg Araki's Nowhere. I'd rather not see explicit sex or clumsy stereotypes. I see both in Brokeback Mountain. Plus, the lead characters were not sympathetic. They were selfish and dishonest. Their families were more sympathetic. That's a fatal flaw, IMO. Their affair wasn't about mature, adult love. It was a selfish and destructive fling. If they think this message warms people to homosexuality, they thought wrong. If anything, Brokeback reinforces negative stereotypes. Who would want to be identified with the characters in BBM? It's a film for shallow audiences, like Crash (2005). Its message is trite and half-hearted.
