I finally own the DVD!

It may not be known that the DVD is out of print, and the publisher is delaying putting our more. The DVD is extremely hard to find, therefore, and is quite expensive. Auctions for this movie ask north of $50 even for used copies, many new unopened copies are listed above $75.

I finally found a new one for less than $50 at Amazon's listings of 3rd-party sellers (it wasn't an auction tho'). I've never paid this much for a movie, but as it's in my top ten films, I'm absolutely delighted.

I'll watch it tonight for the first time in over 5 years. Can't wait!

Hi guys,
I want to know, the version you've got on DVD is the full, theatrical version?
I made som enquiries and the DVD is not out yet. So you must have some pretty hot stuff there.
I'll be grateful if you let me know. If it is the full version, I'll do ANYTHING to get one.
Thanks

I bought one (NOT full version) for 4 dollars tonight...I had previously bought the same copy at this local used movie store, and then traded it back in. Well anyways, I wanted to see the film again so I bought it a second time (dumb I realize) but this time I will hold on to it...I am surprised how much people will pay for it. I would like to see the full version too. Mine is 114 min, has NO special features, so I don't know how exciting that is to die-hard fans of this movie.

Don't touch it, Jack! You don't know where it's been!

I'm not sure what you mean by the "Full" version. My DVD is 124 minutes long, and is just as I remember seeing it in the theatres.

And what did the poster above mean when he said it wasn't the "full" version? I'm really curious about this!

A title search at Amazon will find it, showing used copies for sale starting at $37.98 US. The UPC code of my copy is 09600904759, so you can double check if it's the exact same version I have....

Where did you get a 124-min DVD of Apartment Zero? The movie was cut by 7-min on video, supposedly by the director. The copy selling on Amazon is 117-min. You can rent it from Nicheflix A La Carte - with a large deposit. They say it's 117-min, and their information is reliable. The DVD is NOT the same movie as was shown in theaters. Several scenes with implied homosexuality were removed.

I saw this movie when I was in high school in 1989 and it made a powerful impression on me. I have been trying like crzy to find the DVD. It would be great to hear the director's narration, also both actors are working as well.

I would like to know if there are any real dates for the DVD release.
For what I gather the DVD in offer at the moment is a pirate copy.

I've got the laserdisc for $5.00 in a second hand bookstore!! I already have in on betamax but i thought it was time to get a new format since the beta tape is fading out. I never saw the dvd around and I thought it was never released

The only DVD release of this film that I know of (which I own) is on Platinum Disc, which sold for about $6 when first released. No extras, but video quality (full screen) was good. I didn't know there were 2 versions of it, but this one is under 2 hrs, and it seems to be exactly the same version I watched on VHS years earlier.

reply

The Platinum DVD is cut by 7 min, from 124 to 117 min. According to IMDB, all of the video releases are cut. The original theatrical version included scenes that suggest the characters are homosexual. IMDB says the director made these cuts or approved them, but I don't believe it.

I've never heard of a second version. Amazon only has one and it's the same that Nicheflix ALC lists as 117 min. Some Amazon reviewers suggested that the Platinum DVD might be a bootleg or illegitimate copy from VHS. The video isn't great from what I hear. It's pan-and-scan, for starters. I would've rented it, but I noticed it's not as long as IMDB says.

I always check running time and alternate versions, so I don't get burned by DVDs that add or remove scenes. Even if the director approved changes, I don't always like meddling with the original theatrical cut.

"Like ive said before - there is NO official DVD release ..almost certainly the copies floating around are copies from vhs/bootlegs..."

I'm not sure they are bootlegs, but they certainly aren't the theatrical version that most people want. Maybe this Platinum company owns the movie's rights. But I would stay away from their crummy (and now overpriced) DVD. Wait for Criterion to release it. The film deserves anamorphic, widescreen, remastered audio and video, theatrical and/or director approved cut, trailers, deleted scenes, commentaries, featurettes, etc. Criterion would do this properly.

I live in Australia and I have a dvd of Apartment Zero. It runs 114 minutes, it came in a legitimate looking case, the label on the disc says THE MOVIE LOCATOR, [email protected]. It has a U.S. pat. no. and says DVD video.
At no time have I thought I bought a bootleg copy of this film. I would really love to have the full version, but doubt it will ever be released and there will never be a release with deleted scenes, commentaries etc after all this time as they would not exist and I doubt you would get the director and actors to comment now.

reply

It was released about a year ago with a priceless commentary by Martin Donovan plus a chat between David Koepp and Steven Soderbergh
