I remember back before this film was released, that it was supposed to be released under a different name (a one word title).
I believe there was an article in Starlog magazine about this.

LOL. I used to read Starlog back then and remember exactly the news snippet where they mentioned this.
It was originally going to be called "Outer Heat". But it turns out that 2 other cop movies released that summer (1988) had "heat" in the title: "Red Heat" with Schwazenneger (http://imdb.com/title/tt0095963/ ) and "Dead Heat", a sort of horror comedy with Treat Williams & Joe Piscopo ( http://imdb.com/title/tt0094961/). The producers decided not to add to the confusion and changed the title.
Personally, I kind of liked "Outer Heat" as a title.
