continuity with TV series?

Was the TV series that came later supposed to be in the same continuity as this movie? I know the series is set about a month after the events of the movie but Sikes looks a lot younger and IIRC, certain details about Francisco's family don't match up. Can someone please elaborate?

TV shows aren't always exact to the movies.

Its a tv show based on the same characters. The network producers have no idea how many people actually saw the movie (only a minor success) so they basically remade the series using the same characters. Every tv show based on a movie does this unless the movie is wildly popular. I enjoyed both the movie and the series.

IICR one thing was the movie footage Sike's murdered partner was reused in the TV series.

I thought the TV series used that footage well and came up with a better reason why Sikes didn't fire into the store whilst Tuggs was getting shot at.

Also I liked the storyline they used that with, and I'm surprised the bit where Tuggs gets killed was shown on TV back then. It was pretty violent.

The main change worthy of note was the complete alteration of the motivation behind some of what was going on (the "evolving into monsters - not" and "corrupt cops" elements instead of the far grittier version in the movie.

Sykes was a little younger/more likable in the TV series (and not as racist towards Newcomers either; although he seemed to be softening towards them by the end of the movie anyway), he even had a Newcomer girlfriend in the series.

I personally liked the TV series better than the original film. The movie is an OK "buddy cop" movie with the sci-fi twist, but the TV series dug deeper into the uneasy relationships between the humans and Newcomers, plus gave us more background into the Newcomers' culture, habits, history, etc. It's a shame the TV series didn't last very long.

The TV series had one of my favorite comments on racism - when the parents were trying to throw George's daughter out of school, Sykes pulled her aside and asked the crowd "What is it that you want?"

Someone in the crowd said "We just want her to go back where she belongs."

And Sykes said passionately "She belongs *here*"

The series is undoubtedly better than the film. There are so many improvements, the storylines are really well crafted and are really effective in portraying the social issues the film should have looked at.

I think it's interesting that people like the series better then this movie, I think the movie is far superior and prefer it over the other. The made for TV movies were pretty good.
