I agree and disagree about the series ending early
I've read a lot of posts on this board saying that they cancelled the show too soon. But the decision was made because we had been with Kevin through his childhood/puberty situations and it just seemed that the show should be over. Even Fred Savage and Danica said in a recent interview that they ended it because it had run its course and it felt right to end it. (To be honest, I think part of the decision for the cancellation might have been because of lackluster ratings at the time.)
So I, too, agree that the show should have ended when it did in that sense. And unlike others, I loved the series finale and (after much debate) agree that it's best for Kevin and Winnie to go their own ways and not get together. For them to end up together would be Cliche 101, very amateurish, and her leaving is way more realistic and makes the arc more poignant in my opinion.
All this said, it still would be interesting to have seen an "update" several years down the road. It's probably too late now and it would likely just be stupid at this point, but it would have been cool to have an updated mini-series perhaps in the mid-2000s. Actually, if they really wanted to take a chance at something (and hell, these networks are so desperate these days, who knows?), maybe they'll show an adult Kevin Arnold with a nagging wife, trying to teach the same lessons to his kids that he encountered himself before. However, since the original show came out in the late 80s/early 90s but took place in the late 60s/early 70s, does this mean that a new show would have to take place in the early 2000s?
