This show scared me for life!!

Let me explain!

It was mid 91 and I spent a cosy friday evening with my parents in our house. As usual on fridays back then, I got to decide the food and 9 out of 10 times I "ordered" pizza! This night was no excepsion! =)
After dinner we sat down to watch some TV. My mom glanced over the TV-Guide and found that the new-started Swedish broadcast channel TV4 was premiering a new show this night based on the movie War Of the Worlds from 1953. Early 40's born as my parents are, they decided to watch the show, I didnt really pay any attention, I just wanted to see some action. My life never got the same again.

I had seen MANY horrormovies and other stuff before this, I was easily frightened, I admit, but this was something special. I found the first episode absolutely terrifying. The scenes were the terrorists are taken over by the aliens was the first contact I had with it, and boy did it scare me. When the first alien/human comes walking against the female terrorist, and mumbles that stuff in the alien language.. damn I was scared!

Later on in the episode, the scenes at the abondoned turistplace, thats when the real action got to me. When Ironhorse comes running down the hill and the three leader aliens comes out of the house, I almost *beep* my pants. Holy crap!!! I couldnt breethe.
Fascinated by this show, I forced myself to see a couple of moore episodes, but after a couple of weeks of sleeping way to little, and running back and forward to my parents bedroom every night, my parents finally fobid me to watch the show, it was actually a quite relife for me! But I was scared for almost two years from that. I was absolutely convinced that aliens would take over the planet, it was just a matter of time.

I got the DVDs a couple of days ago, and I still found the first couple of episodes (especially the first one) very scary. Ofcourse I see everyting from a different point of view today, but I still get the same kind of feelings as I did back then.

Sorry for my bad english, I just wanted to share my experience of this series. It has made a deep inpact in my life, and allthough my friends laugh at me when I show them the episodes, I still love it!

I was eighteen when the show premiered. I am no fan of gore, so the show was rather gross to me. As it continued, I was always really shocked by how violent and gross it was. Still, I liked the stories and characters. I found it to be rather disturbing at times. I can see where you would have found it scary and intense at the age of nine, though I am surprised that your parents let you watch as much as they did back then. It seems that people were pretty strict about what kids watched back in the 1980's, and this showed dared to push it with violence and gore.
