If you check out the interview of Salkind on the Superman Homepage, he takes about the first season -- the shows, the writers, the casting and some of the things that lead to the firings.
sharedefinitely worth buying. i like newton better but both were great Superboys so i will be purchasing all the seasons.
shareI'm not going to lie, Season One was the worst season of Superboy. But I'll definitely be buying it anyway, because if the DVD sales for season one are awful, they won't release the other seasons. Anyway, Season One does have its moments and John Newton wasn't as shabby as some will have you believe. I also can't wait to see the special features that come with the DVD set.
shareIn his interview on the Superman Homepage, I recall Ilya Salkind admitting that the first few episodes of Season 1 were terrible. And, he took responsibility, saying that he wasn't very hands-on in the beginning. He might have even used the phrase "I was phoning it in." But, the show got better, and it always got good ratings. And, I doubt Warner would just throw Season 1 out there and see what happens. DVD sales are rediculous right now. And, everyone loves the S-man.
shareIt's been reported that this is currently the only season of Superboy that is being released for DVD and the sales for this set, rely on the production of other seasons! I urge all fans of Superman to buy this DVD set, in order for the later seasons to be produced!
shareLet's all get those credit cards ready and break the piggy banks. Cause it's the YEAR OF SUPERMAN.
shareSome sites are selling the complete "4 Seasons set of superboy" already!! I just ordered a set!! Hope its legit!! Long wait for it, But cant wait to get it either way.... Worth the wait and the money!! there goes my credut card!!
shareas far as I know (and there's people on this thread who know more) it's definitely a bootleg and the production quality might be poor. I know Christopher Gerard (without WB consent) was selling the Seasons he was in, but I don't know where Season 1 came from. But, with these copies out there, I'm sure WB will put out a better set to stand apart. More extras, interviews than Smallville has would be good.
shareThat's definitely a bootleg copy of the series you bought, my friend. Since this series is such a cult classic and since it's been off the air for so long, it's bootleg gold. The DVDs you get will be episodes taped off the TV during the show's intial run more than ten years ago. Quality? Maybe. I wouldn't risk it, myself.
shareSince Gerard Christopher later served as a producer on Superboy (can't remember when, during the third or fourth season?), and even ended up being a writer (I think he wrote two episodes), I guess by being a producer he was given copies of episode film masters (I don't think Gerard ever directed an episode of Superboy). Gerard owns film masters to all of the episodes he was in (seasons 2, 3, and 4). Gerard made use of these Superboy episode film masters by offering episodes for sale on his official website. Since 1999 up to 2004, he offered four VHS volumes of Superboy tapes with each video containing 4 episodes each (they were all selected episodes from seasons 3 and 4). In the summer of 2004, due to overwhelming requests from fan demand, Gerard finally offered DVDs of the show for sale on his website, starting with his first year on the show, Superboy season 2 (1989-1990). It was a three disc set containing all 26 episodes of that season. He had planned to also offer seasons 3 and 4 on his website in the near future, but ended his DVD project in August 2005, after getting a request from the studio Warner Bros. to stop selling DVDs of the show as WB themselves may be in the planning stages of making official DVD releases of Superboy. Only Season 2 was ever released on DVD by Gerard on his website. I think it was great that Gerard made the effort on making episodes of Superboy available to folks who wanted them. With the legal wrangling that Warner Bros. put on the Superboy series from ever being put on the air ever again in North America (not even as syndicated re-runs), as well as home video of any sort. The visual and audio quality of the episodes Gerard offered on the four VHS tapes, and later on the DVD set was excellent, since they were off from his episode masters. It seemed quite obvious that Gerard referred to some sort of professional video duplication company to copy his masters. Although what Gerard did was also "unofficial" or "bootlegging", his tapes and the single season DVD set was better than compared to what anyone else would get from fan made copies.
shareLike I said, "there's people on this thread who know more." Superman fans are the most knowledgable fans in the world. Brian Singer beware. Superman Returns better not suck.
