Weren't they once planning to kill Roseanne off around Season 2 or so?
I remember reading years ago that they considered killing Roseanne off during season 2 or so. Supposedly, this is the reason why they had that one episode where Roseanne was largely absent with Jackie looking after the kids and cooking dinner for Dan.
I can't remember what the exact reason was--I think it was in regards to some for of behind the scenes drama regarding Roseanne and her feeling she wasn't a "strong enough" character in the show.
It's entirely possible that the show might not be able to last without the horrid witch regardless of her offscreen antics. Why? Because her character really did invoke the most comedy from other characters. Their reactions to Roseanne were usually the best moments. However, I guess if they retooled it enough it MIGHT work but they would definitely require a bit more than a lateral move.
They definitely had some comedy gold potential set up with Christopher Lloyd supposedly being planned as a long-term character. Jackie's moments with Bev were always great as well.
I noticed in the revival that Roseanne really wasn't as large of a presence as she used to be. The show seemed to balance a focus between Roseanne and Darlene.
A part of me doesn't want them to go through with it but another part wants to see more of the other characters. I'm on the fence here and I say this as someone who almost ALWAYS hates when a long-running show replaces their lead.
