Beckys

Is it just me or did you dislike both of them? Nothing against the actresses I just mean the character itself. Becky started out okay but over time wow she became a spoiled, selfish jerk. Everytime shes in a scene I cant stand it.

There were times when I couldn't stand either of the girls. When Becky got into her selfish attitudes, she was horrible. Darlene's constant sarcastic remarks and mean behavior toward everyone made me want to smack her in the head.

Lecy’s Becky – the only Becky that ever counted, IMO – had her good points and bad points. I liked that the writers made her popular but not ditsy – she took school very seriously. The character is sunk for me though when, in a moronic and hasty move, she marries Mark and throws her life away.

Exactly! Even when I hated the brattiness, I rooted for her to leave Lanford and become something. She blew it (Darlene too) with the Healy Boys introduction.

Becky character was had some goofy moments in the beginning but I liked her. Once she hooked up with Mark she became selfish and annoying but still its how a lot of teens get when they start dating and testing boundaries. I wish she didnt go and marry Mark like she did, she had a lot going for her. When actresses changed the character changed I could not stand Sarah's Becky and then Darlene was even worse to her too turning her into a bimbo brain.
I only consider Lecy as Becky I hated Sarah's version so much the way she played it and the character she was turned into.
Actually most of the characters got worse over time. I really hated how it got so anti-men espiclaly when Jackie got pregnant and then Roseanne. I cannot watch most of the later seasons and Roseanne was disgusting to look at after her plastic surgery. Jackie became a slapstick character.

I found Lecy's Becky very real. She had her ugly, hateful moments like all teenagers, and also her nice moments. She had her horribly embarrassed moments ("I'm quitting pep squad, I'm quitting school, and if anyone calls me tell them I'm DEAD!") Good sister, good daughter, moments. Mean sister, horrid brat moments. She was easy to detest in some of those horrible moments- ("If Dad knew how to run a business...")

But there were times I thought it was easy to empathize with her, too. It would be tough being the oldest kid in that family. Of course, later on she made some colossal life changing mistakes, but I'd like to believe that in the long run, Becky 1 would turn out okay.

Now, Sarah's Becky was just straight up annoying to me. They had changed the character so much. She became a spoiled, whiny, and immature moron. I'm not faulting the actress, just the direction the writers took her character. Lecy's Becky would have continued with her education, would not have looked down on Mark for flunking out of trade school, and never would have worked at Bunz.

You summed it up for me. I always thought that second Becky was too pretty for the part to play Dan and Roseanne's daughter or Mark's wife. Not that the first Becky wasn't pretty, she just had more grit and fit into that family.

reply

Too pretty and too upper middle class. Sarah's Becky did not come off as working class.

Yeah Becky 2 always looked like she'd fit in better on Full House than Roseanne.

I thought Sarah was perfectly cast as a doctor on How I Met Your Mother.

Ever noticed how Becky two hopped when she walked? Like she was always skipping. So annoying!

I Liked Lecy's Becky.

I like how the two daughters grew up (until S6, that doesn't count :P)

Lecy's Becky was her Mom. Smart, funny, headstrong. But she also made the same decisions her Mom made and married the bad boy at a young age. Of course, as with Dan, Mark actually turns out to be a good guy (again, until S6). Everyone told Roseanne she was making a mistake marrying Dan, but it turned out okay. Now Becky does the same thing. In contrast Darlene was the one who went to school, who did what Roseanne and Becky always wanted to do. She was the underachiever who did it (until S6)

Becky 2 was a barbie doll, and Mark became comic relief. That killed that whole parallel. Not Sarah Chalke's fault. The entire writing of the show was going down the toilet by then.

But I should be honest and say that I live in a world where Lecy Becky and Mark go to Minneapolis, where he has a mechanic job with the city and she is a community college girl working p/t. Darlene is living the dream that Roseanne and Becky passed up to get married. The bike shop is closed but Dan is doing construction and they will get by. Nothing else happened :)

you wouldn't believe how many 90's sitcoms are so much better if you stop after season 4 or 5 :)
