I didn't like how they wrote Dan character in the last 2 o 3 Seasons. In Early Seasons Dan would never ever dared called Roseanne a Controlling Bitch, Fat or a Bad Mother and he would have never said his kids were failures in the early season's! Dan of the early season would have never cheated on her either (I know he didn't really cheat on her and at this point it was a dream but but Technically speaking) When Tom Arnold (I never like his character but a least when he was on the show behind the scenes it was better) was working on the show (First 5 Years) they had a loving marriage.
And none of the kids I thought were failures at all. I mean Darlene may have been married and pregnant but she was still going to school and was pretty much done almost and had Job's offers! DJ was not even out of High School yet! And Becky for the most part I think was okay and doing just fine. Also Jerry was not even a year old yet.
Kids are not perfect and are not going to turn out the way your want them too! I heard something the other day, Stop forcing your kids or holding them at high expectations to be someone that they are not or may no be and thinking that they will do everything that you want them to do(I hope someone understand What I am trying to say as I don't have Kids), and just let them be their own peoples and they will find their way or where they belong in this world. College is not for everybody.
Could have imagine if Jackie, Becky, Mark or Darlene were in the house during that fight?
Dan reached his limit. Roseanne was a controlling and manipulative woman riding high on double standards. She got off on doing what a male character couldn't do because it was her show. Hypocrite.
As for the kids, Becky and Darlene settled for those Healy boys. Imagine what they would have been like had they not met them. Remember upon Dan's death, we honestly don't know if Darlene stayed at that job or was able to return. DJ had the best chance to leave that town and follow his dreams.
Black men and a whole lot of *beep* white men have had plenty fun adoring my ass!

Somehow I think Becky would've settled for a Mark type whoever it was. Darlene, who knows? Barring the plot twist of the final episode, at least in this universe she met a guy who did love her and who respected her and who was excited to be her husband and the father to their baby and she WAS going to college and making something of herself.

I have to agree that Becky didn't turn out that well. At least not for what her aspirations were during the first several seasons. I'm sure even she was disappointed in her life. She wasn't a loser or anything because she seemed like she was working for more, but she definitely made some poor choices and landed her in that trashy trailer and a measly supermarket job. Although, her husband's job is in dispute because the fans seem to agree that working for the city as a mechanic wouldn't render them as poor as the show tried to make them appear to be.

That is one point that was so unrealistic. Mark had a great job for a guy that didn't even finish high school (or did he?) and yet Becky was working at the grocery store like they could barely pay for the tin can that they lived in. In reality they would be able to afford a really nice apartment, or even a small house for rent. I hated that it was a big deal when Becky wanted to go back to college. What kind of a husband would get upset that his wife wanted to go to school to earn a degree? I would be relieved if my daughter finally woke up and wanted to go to college after wasting her life with a guy like Mark.
What I found annoying is that the park is suggested to be full of those trailers, which are more travel trailers for vacation than a long term residence. I mean, they don't have water to drink from and have to use a "local pump" to get some water??
NO ONE would be allowed to live in a place like that. the park would be shut down. There are plenty of nice parks in the 90s and no that aren't low rent cesspools of stereotypical trailer trash. Granted, most are low income people, either retired or small families that actually OWN their trailers, so the pad rent is WAY CHEAPER than any apartment no matter how big.
In fact, I've seen brand new, overpriced apartment complexes turn into drug dens faster than people can move out. yet apartments are still seen as "living better" than trailer parks? LMAO
A few year sago someone on a Roseanne Forum on sitcomonline said The first Becky would have never lived or moved into a dump like that (Remember when Mark and Becky moved in to the Trailer Park Sarah Chalk was playing Becky) which thinking about it I tihnk is very true and I do agree with tht statement! 2 or 3 Seasons earlier Becky would have never agreed to have lived in such lace in a Trailer.
However by season 7 The show was on it whole "white Trash" course
had Becky 1 stayed things may have turned out a little differently. You do make a good point. Becky did throw away her hope of going to College for Mark and followed him to Minnesota where he took a Job and from what it look like they had a decent Apartment there. You think he be happy that she was finally following her dreams.
And Yes Mark was working for The city whcih had to be good Money. But yet like they were dirt poor or something.
Is it really such a bad ting working at supermarket? I don't think so. It depends on the Supermarket And that was before she Married Mark.
I guess I can agree with the trier thing. It not exactly Ideal living! But at least they had a roof over their head and a little money. It could been worse and by the end they had money after won lottery.
What surprise me was her working at that Bunz place. I wonder how Mark was okay with that because most men wouldn't be
I hate hate hate that fight. And if that was supposed to be the last episode (before Roseanne decided to do season 9) then it would have been a terrible way to end the series. Mind you, the way the series actually did end was even worse.
That fight was the worse! The whole series tanked. The ending was in my opinion one of the worse finales of a tv show ever. It was basically "oh by the way my sister is gay and my husband died of a heart attack so just forget everything you've been watching." Sorry if I sound bitter was but the finale just about ruined the whole series for me.
The terrible finale could have been salvaged if they had just left it as if she had written the 9th season as a novel (the lottery win and all the adventures that happened) and not change anything about the past seasons. And Dan would be alive.
The Connor kids were losers. Jackie says this at one point, too. Maybe before Dan? I always wonder if the real Roseanne thought this of her real kids who did grow up to be losers. Funny enough, her Darlene daughter is married to a Mark type. Just like the show, she favored the Darlene daughter and oldest son. The Becky/oldest daughter seemed nice but Roseanne didn't really interact with her. She seemed annoyed by her. She did a reality show a few years back and of all of her kids (not including the youngest who either was estranged or lived with his father), the real DJ was the only not living with her and off her. He even says "My vacation is over and I'm going back to (I forgot the state) and my job". She also has a daughter she gave up and reunited with, but I believe they are estranged again as she wasn't on the show.
Back to the show, I always wished Dan would have divorced Roseanne. She always used him to do her bidding. Like I hate the episode where Leon is finally betting her at her game, and she basically sicks Dan on him. If Leon did sicked his husband on Roseanne, she'd be the victim.
Hold your horses. Darlene was finishing college. How is that being a loser?
Becky went back to community college and looked like she was back on track.
DJ wasn't a high school dropout. That's where we left off with him.
What have you done that's so great?
Re: Roseanne's real kids, I will concede that from what we've seen, they aren't career people. I'm not contesting that. You claim that she must be estranged from one of her daughters because she wasn't on her reality show? That's a leap. Not everyone wants to be on a reality show.
Community college is called community college because they'll accept anyone. I liked Becky the best, but she became a loser.
DJ was weird, socially, awkward, and even Roseanne mostly ignored her.
Darlene had to have a shot gun wedding. She was a "vegetarian" who had no problem sabotaging her family business (like the fair), but she wears leather jackets. Darlene was an entitled jerk who wasn't as smart as she thought. Did she ever publish her comic? Write a book? She was an "artist" and so "smart". She grew up to be a big fish in a microscopic pond. Golf clap.
I don't live with/off my parents, I didn't have a shot gun wedding, I never had to go to community college (went to universe on scholarship), and I've written sections for textbooks that have been published. Before anyone thinks I grew up in some rich place with great parents, I didn't. You know what? I keep striving and want to do better. I don't get job offers complain about them and turn them down to live with mommy and daddy and have babies and expect my parents to support me, all the while thinking I'm high and mighty. That is a loser.
That makes a little more sense, but we can agree to disagree. I'm not looking for a fight.
It's just a sitcom at the end of the day, and all the characters deteriorated at some point so I don't quite take everything too seriously beyond certain seasons of this show.
But as Darlene emphasized in the episode you are referring to: she was in college. All college kids are living on borrowed funds. They're working towards something that requires them to essentially not be capable of paying their own expenses at that same time. That's all.
Becky and Mark were able to buy the trailer. Mark got a good job working drywall again, and with Beck working at a grocery store they were probably getting by, but the point is once you own a home you build credit until you can save up enough to get a loan to buy a better home. With your degree you should know that.
Darlene and David if you remember had a very good plan for managing themselves. David was set up with a good job, and Darlene was going to go to summer school to graduate on time. She probably got the copyright job and worked from home. They're probably still in an apartment but it's most likely of their own choice.
I'd be willing to bet that even if the lottery hadn't struck, DJ would still have met Heather and by now I can see them living in NYC with DJ in some type of graphic design, with Heather working for google or something.
Logic overrules degrees sometimes.
BTW - I have a bachelors in Veterinary Science. Just thought I'd share and be a braggart, too.
I understand to some extent if you simply don't like the characters' attitudes. Fine. To each their own. But like I said—all of the characters fell victim to character defamation: when a show is on air too long, the characters turn into caricatures of their former selves. So it's hard to take the later seasons seriously anyway...
Good point about David. He did have a good graphic design job lined up in Chicago, I remember. Darlene was obviously going to finish college regardless of her pregnancy. She only had one year left anyway.
Were the kids amazing successes? No. But have you seen kids who fare much worse? All the time. I have tons of relatives who never even finished high school or got a GED, which both Darlene and Becky did. And btw: I have a diploma from high school and college, yes.
