Grandpa Al

There is no way Roseanne originaly intended for him to be the ass she said he later was. A child abuser and big time cheater. I mean not the Roseanne character but the actress decided to make him that way. The two epsiodes they showed him he was a nice silly old man nobody you would imagine is basically a devil. Dan's mother same thing they never planned for her to be mentally ill. They just needed to give drama the later years.

Like if Roseanne's father had been seen after the abuse and cheating storylines he would probably seem different too.

I also don't think they ever intended David and Mark's moteer to be like that when they were both introduced.

Completely agree.

That old dude beat them with a belt? That guy had a woman stashed on the side? That man caused Roseanne to not trust Dan the first 5 years of their marriage?

Nah.

Early AL was the definition of a harmless old man. He got up at 4am, needed Citrus Fruit lol, said 'pull my finger', and coughed up huge hairballs.

Plus he had a sharp sense of humor buying poor cousin whatever the name was rock candy after gum surgery haha.

it happens in real life. my niece worshipped her grandfather, but refused to believe me or her mother that he had not always been that way. This included the belt hanging in the pantry much like Al Harris' belt hanging in the living room closet. Both were in easy reach for his own brand of discipline, whether warranted or not.

My mother also claimed her father was a mean drunk and alcoholic wife beater, but that's not the man I remember, either.

Sometimes, people change over the years. Sometimes, not.

I'm not excusing this show's portrayal, but there were evidently some anger issues between Roseanne and her parents that she chose to play out on her show.

I wonwder how it would be if Dan and Roseanne's parents switched couples. I know Dan's parents were broken up but let's say they were together. Then I wonder

Yeah but would you imagine him as being the kind of guy to put his kids in the car to go chase tornadoes either? And that was season 1.

it happens in real life . just because he was abusive in the 50s , 60s, doesnt mean he is going to be abusive when the kids are adults.

you meet my father right now you would never believe he was a drunk abusive man before.

he doesnt drink anymore and became a sweet old man that hides his anger well.

Exactly, same way with my grandmother, even people who KNEW her back then would swear she was the SWEETEST little thing that could never harm a fly, shows what they knew.
