Becky was a real brat, but Roseanne made it her business it seemed to make it much worse. It became a power struggle not only for Becky, but for ROSEANNE.
Ro always hated when things did not go her way, when she couldn't control every little thing or every person.
Dan was actually right in how he felt about the whole situation: Back off a little bit. Let tensions ease.

I would have backed off too. Roseanne was waaay too overbearing on her kids and ironically all her interfering backfired on her anyway. I like when Roseanne found the diary and Jackie told her not to read it because it was something their mom would have done. It just wasn't Roseanne's personality to let things go though.
shareI always felt like Roseanne maybe secretly hated/resented Becky. She was a mostly good kids who always had to take up for everyone because she oldest. All the good the perky, skinny, blonde does is ignored. The bad is always thrown the book at. Notice the loser brunette daughter is beloved. Roseanne probably felt she was getting back at all the pretty blonde girls who wouldn't be her friend.
