"Talk about having no life"

In Fathers and Daughters, it strikes me as funny how Darlene puts down Becky for her weekend plans when the highlight of hers includes watching a sporting event on TV with their dad. In other words, who is Darlene to talk?

I agree w/ the other posts here: Darlene was just busting Becky's chops—that's how they interacted with each other. Sure, in the later seasons Darlene (and all the other characters) became more extreme in their behaviors—and said or did things that were not justifiable. But I honestly think in this particular scene, Darlene was just being her usual biting self. She knew Becky had a substantial social life (especially compared to herself!) lol, but it was just her way to mouth off for the sake of it. Is it right? No. But it was sibling ribbing. That's all.

That's Darlene being Darlene.

It was an effective taunt towards her because unlike Darlene, Becky actually cared about cultivating a social life.

Anyone here mentions Hotel California dies before the first line clears his lips.

Exactly. And frankly, it wasn't malicious. It's not like Darlene was disrespecting Becky. It was solely adolescent mouthing off. Verbal diarrhea. I don't think anyone heard Darlene's "insult" and thought: 'By god, she's right! Becky DOESN'T have a life, because she's doing that!'

No one did. Not the characters, not us :)

Darlene was her mother's daughter, she had the sarcastic humor, even when she was little.

Darlene was always a jerk, especially to her family. I noticed she stuck her tongue up where the sun don't shine when David's Amazon of a mom wanted to whoop her. All of sudden, she learned respect. I know violence is wrong, but with people like Darlene it's the only way to stop them. Same with Roseanne when she was sass mouthing until the IRS man asked her name. Then she learned respect. I wish there was an episode where David's mom went to their house and beat them up. Just Darlene and Roseanne.

When you're a teenager in SOMEBODY ELSE'S house, you probably will hold your tongue around them—especially when they appear a bit unhinged, and it's regarding a touchy subject like sex.

I don't think Darlene was defeated, she just wasn't STUPID enough to talk back in that scene. Most kids her age, no matter how unruly, would've done the exact same thing: just held their tongue, like "whatever..."

I would have barked back, but I've never been afraid of putting up fists or getting one in the face. I'm not a coward. It's easy to talk smack when you know nothing is going to happen. My husband's mom is very verbally abusive to him. She weighs a lot more than I do. I told her old behind what's what. I love him. I'm not surprised Darlene was garbage like her mom. I hated David, too. He was too good for Darlene.
