The evolution of Roseanne's parents

Between "Dear Mom and Dad" in 1989 and the course of the rest of the series, the friendly, happy man everyone was happy to see turned out to be an adulterer who had abused Roseanne and Jackie when they were kids. And we all know how Bev evolved over the years.

They were not the same characters in "Dear Mom and Dad."

I've never been a big fan of the first season.

Season 1 was the only time Bev was remotely tolerable to me - she just becomes more shrill and horrible as the series goes on (with a few moments where she's actually cool). You'd think she'd mellow out and relax after their separation and then the death of her husband.

Side note - I'm not one who hates season 9, but one thing that really bothers me is Bev revealing herself to be a lesbian. If she was a lesbian, why did she start dating other guys after her husband died? It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for her to just suddenly be dating women, but why didn't she just decide not to be in a relationship if she was a lesbian and apparently had such a hard time making love with a man she needed to use a Playboy magazine every time?
