In season 9 DJ had to move his bedroom to the unfinished basement because they were running out of space in the house. They had already won the lottery. Why didn't they renovate the basement? They could have built a couple of real bedrooms down there.

It was them ignoring the fact they made a stupid mistake with the lottery thing. It contradicts and undermines the whole premise of the show's original theme. Watching the family go from rags to riches was hard to watch beyond one episode in the whole 9th season. It was a dead end and they knew what a miserable mistake they made.
shareThey probably didn't want to build a new set(s) for a show on it's last legs. If you notice, that season they go to a ton of different places. They probably took an existing set and made minor changes than having to build a totally new set.
shareBecause they didn't think of renovating the house beyond redecorating and DJ only moved in there at the last minute so they didn't think about renovating the basement beforehand and didn't renovate it while DJ was using it as his bedroom because then where would he sleep?
