I wish there were still places like Rodbells

A store that has everything with a diner in the middle. You can't find diners hardly anywhere anymore, nevermind in a retail store.

That's gold baby

I agree. Despite Roseanne's rotten attitude, those types of diners had some of the best food and service. I loved eating at those types of places.

I never once had good food in such a place. There used to be good free standing diners but most have faded away and I am sure quality was a factor in them going out of business. Usually, the person who started the place and made it renowned retires and the new owner figures they can shovel anything out from the kitchen but most people can tell the difference so eating there is not the treat that it used to be. Too bad as bottom feeder chain restaurants do no service in terms of quality. No place to go if you want to just have a chicken salad sandwich or a bowl of chili that tastes good.

It was largely the rise of fast food chain restaurants that led to the demise of dinners.

I don't recall seeing much of these, but when I was a preteen in the early '90s, there was a store in downtown that was like Sears, I believe—and there was a luncheonette on one floor. It had great chicken salad sandwich, potato salad, and chilli. I mean—given it was a luncheonette in a store.

It looked charming. We have one named sallys and a few white flashes

Cheer up; you'll always have a Dunkin Donuts or McDonald's inside of your local Wal-Mart. God bless America!

It's not really the same, but Nordstrom stores have restaurants in them. They're overpriced and have an even more limited menu than before, so you're out of luck if you don't like fish or onions, though. A diner-diner, that had coffee and burgers and stuff, would be really cool.
