Did any of you marry at a young age like Becky or Darlene?

I never been in that situation like Becky or Darlene to want to get married at 17, 18 and even if I did get married before 18 I'm sure my parents wouldn't approve as most parents. I hear about most older couples who married when they were young and some are still together, then of course there are some that realize they married to early and end up divorced.

No, my mom did that to get away from her parents, my sister did that to get away from my mom, and they paid a bad price for it. I had 2 shining examples why NOT to do it, I wasn't about to join the bandwagon.

I married my husband at 18 on our 5th date but, surprisingly, you'll find similar stories throughout the military. I read a statistic ten years ago that the average age a Marine is married is 19 (that may have changed).
I'd say about 75% of the couples who married before 21 (that I personally know) are together.
I'm happy but it did take a lot of adjusting in the beginning. It's easy to talk about happiness now, more than a decade later, but back then...yeah, some of the couples we knew really struggled. I think the main issue is that you're not done growing into the person you're going to be at 18 so you're faced with the challenge of growing together or growing apart.

Well said I used to be in the military and I noticed young men a woman from off base or marry a girl they dated in high school to collect BAH. My brother was in the Army and he told me he had a friend (that is also in the Army)that married this girl without even knowing much about her, my brother did say the girl is just into money and have the guy taking her out to expensive restaurant everyday and buying expensive stuff.

I was in the Navy and like I said this one dude that married a girl off base I think he didn't know her that well married her after 2 days of knowing anything about her and he still is married. This was in 2011 I assume when he married the woman they still together and proving the rest of the people on my ship wrong about his marriage. I'm 34 and haven't been married or claim close to getting engaged and I want a man that got most of the games and cheating out of his system and want a real marriage. I want to be like old couples today that is celebrating 60 years of marriage.

Good post.

I would have married the young Becky but probably would have left in a few months by skipping town.

Hell no.

But, I knew a girl from high school who got pregnant and married her boyfriend at 16 (1992). She got an apartment, albeit crappy, and he worked nights. I wonder how they're doing. I sincerely doubt they are married now.

Black men and a whole lot of *beep* white men have had plenty fun adoring my ass!

Wow married at 16, yeah I doubt if they are together still.

The very thought of marrying as a teenager made me cringe.
But then, not only am I not a *fan* of marriage, I had barely kissed a guy by that age lol....never mind entertained marriage ideas.

I watched at least 3 of my classmates deal with teen pregnancy, and I tell you....it had a huge effect on me.
The thought of such responsibility when you're not even done maturing yourself yet!
I could never see how it would work out, marriage or not.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.

Speaking of teen pregnancy I remember when I was in high school in my 9th grade year and I seen quite a bit of pregnant teenagers I believe they were Junior, senior and probably sophomore. Most of the girls that was pregnant look like they were popular or well known, sometimes I would look at them and think my parents would kill me if I was pregnant at a young age and then I would have try to balance school and taking care of a kid.

still not married, but I know a few who did marry while still in HS.

one classmate was seeing a guy a year or two ahead, I think we were sophomores (10th) when she got pregnant. She was a popular girl, cheerleader, and ran for Student Council. He was the typical football jock. She left about a month before school ended that year for "maternity leave", and came back the next fall. They did get married, but divorced in our senior year. He later became a reverend at his church and ran for a city office on "family values". I *SO* wanted to ask about how his eldest was doing when ever I saw an article online about his campaign.....

Another couple, she was seven years ahead of me, but her mother pulled her and her sisters out at same age she dropped out at. Meanwhile, he was doing "independent study" class on Rocketry at his HS. Anywho, they met while working at the local amusement park, and later described it as "she asked for a ride home, then gave him a ride at home." That was 1981, she got pregnant almost right away at 17. he wasn't quite 18, turning and then a month later, his classmates didn't believe him when he came in and said "I got married this weekend" until he flashed his ring, then he said one teacher accused him of lying about that! 34+ years later, they're still together, four kids, and a baker's dozen grandkids so far.
I'm probably the only one outside the family that puts up with him by choice.... LOL

Had she stayed in school back then (82), it would have been scandalous, as it still was for my classmate. By a few years after I graduated, they were already discussing about an in-school nursery/day care, as several more students behind us had become teen parents. and pretty sure when my latter friend's kids were starting the same HS, they had one.

Most everyone else I knew waited until after HS to get hitched. another jock/cheerleader couple broke up before realizing they didn't want anyone else. they waited a few years to get married, but now have one in college and two more finishing up HS, and are still together.

When I graduated a few girls were pregnant. Then when I graduated from college, I subbed in my hometown. I had a few of their kids in my class. Most of them were bad. I'll never forget one of the kids saw me during dismissal and said "My mom knows you and said you can't get me in trouble". Um, no. :/ They tore down my old high school and the new high school has a daycare in it. Mostly, it's free daycare for the teachers, but some of the kids are of the students of the district. I went once and was depressed. Some of the moms were like 13. WTF? Who's getting a 12 year old pregnant?

I didn't get married until recently, but me and my husband were living together since I was 20. Sometimes, I regret not getting married sooner. It was more about getting settled financially.

I recall my junior year of high school, there was a girl in my English class who had gotten knocked up. The teacher was talking about bravery in regards to a novel we were reading and then said (paraphrasing): "And of course, we all know that [name redacted] is brave for getting pregnant and choosing to stay in school!"

All I could think to myself sarcastically was "Yeah, it would've been even braver to use a condom or just pull out." She was pregnant again shortly after graduation.

There was some girl who was giving her child up for adoption in my high school. The one gym teacher said "Jane is truly a selfless person. She's putting her baby before herself. We can all learn to be less selfish from her example". Then some kid said "What if the people who adopt her kid abuse it?". It all went into chaos and half of the students in the gym claimed they had been abused of molested in their homes and that foster/adopted kids all get raped and beaten. :/ I'm hoping they were just saying it for attention, because it got really dark.

In your classmates' defense, that's a pretty warped perspective from the teacher. I'm quite stunned someone had the sack to call him on it.

How do you mean by the last sentence? Is he a terrible person?

No, I married relatively late (34, wife 30). I am glad I did. Most people I know who married young divorced young. I know if I had married the woman I was with at 20 I'd be miserable now.

That being said, I know a couple who met in grade 9 and 10, married in their early 20's, still together and in love while pushing 40.

reply

Not that young. I got married when I was 22 and my wife at the time was 19. Sadly, it didn't work out. Got divorced 8 years later.
